A Tragic Midnight Fire Leaves Businesses in Ruins
A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of Friday, destroying several furniture workshops and a cafeteria located at the entrance gate of Haven Estate, opposite NNPC Housing Estate in Ugboroke Community, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State. The incident left shop owners in shock and mourning as they tried to come to terms with their losses.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, but eyewitnesses reported that an electric cable from a nearby high-tension line may have fallen and sparked the flames. However, this claim has not been independently verified by authorities.
Firefighters, along with local residents, worked tirelessly to contain the blaze, which started around midnight. Their efforts prevented the fire from spreading to nearby buildings, although it managed to completely destroy several workshops.
Among those affected were Mr Tunde Musa and Mr Kasim Abdurazaq, whose workshops were entirely reduced to ashes. Musa described the moment he received a call informing him of the fire. “By the time I arrived, everything had gone up in flames,” he said, his voice shaking with emotion. “The firefighters were already on the ground, but there was nothing left to save.”
Musa expressed his deep sense of loss and appealed to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the Uvwie Local Government Council for assistance to help affected traders restart their businesses. “I don’t even know how I feel right now,” he added.
Similarly, Mr Abdurazaq, who also lost his entire workshop, described the event as devastating. “When I got here around 12 a.m., everything was already burnt. Nothing was salvaged — not even my personal items or my customers’ furniture. I don’t know what to tell them,” he said, fighting back tears. He called on the government for urgent help, saying he had lost everything to the fire.
“I don’t know where to start from,” Abdurazaq pleaded.
A Scene of Desolation
When our correspondent visited the scene early Friday morning, the area was still filled with the remnants of the fire. Scavengers were seen rummaging through the debris, while affected traders stood helplessly, surveying the remains of their burnt shops and counting their losses.
The Delta State Fire Service had yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the fire at the time of filing this report.
Urgent Calls for Assistance
Both victims emphasized the need for immediate support from the government and local authorities. They highlighted the challenges they face in rebuilding their lives and businesses after such a sudden and tragic loss.
As the community begins to assess the damage, many are left wondering about the future of their livelihoods and the steps needed to recover from this devastating event.
