Former finance minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali passed away in Dhaka on Thursday, marking the end of a life dedicated to public service and national development. He breathed his last at a hospital in the capital, according to his family.
Born on June 2, 1943, in Doctorpara village of Khanasama upazila in Dinajpur, Mahmud Ali was the son of Hasan Ali, a former minister of the then Pakistan government. His early life was shaped by the political landscape of the time, which would later influence his own career in public affairs.
Political Career and Contributions
Mahmud Ali was elected a Member of Parliament four times from the Dinajpur-4 (Khansama-Chirirbandar) constituency during the Awami League government’s tenure. His political journey was marked by a commitment to the people of his region and the broader nation.
He served as the finance minister from January 11, 2024, to August 5, 2024. During this period, he played a crucial role in shaping economic policies that aimed to address the challenges facing the country. Prior to this, he served as the foreign minister from February 2014 to January 2019. In addition, he held the position of minister for disaster management and relief from 2012 to 2013, showcasing his versatility and dedication to various aspects of governance.

Mahmood Ali, popularly known as H M Mahmood Ali, was a former diplomat. His career in diplomacy began after earning his bachelor’s degree in Economics from Dhaka University in 1962, followed by a master’s degree the following year. In 1964, he briefly taught at the same university before joining Pakistan’s Foreign Service in 1966.
While serving as a diplomat under the Pakistan government, he played a significant role in favor of Bangladesh’s independence during the 1971 Liberation War. His contributions during this critical period were instrumental in shaping the course of history for the nation.

Despite his long and distinguished career, Mahmud Ali lost his parliamentary seat after the dissolution of parliament in 2024, following the fall of the Awami League government in the student-led July Uprising. This marked the end of an era for a man who had dedicated his life to public service.
