Arrest of Four Suspects in the Killing of a Chief Imam
The Kwara State Police Command has made significant progress in the investigation into the alleged killing of the Chief Imam of Sokunkpan village, located in the Edu Local Government Area (LGA) of Kwara State. Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, which took place on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, around 9:30 p.m.
According to the police spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the incident was triggered by the death of a 25-year-old man named Ibrahim Gana, who had been admitted to a hospital in the area. His death reportedly led to a chain of events that resulted in the tragic loss of life of the Chief Imam, Alhaji Abdullahi Audu.
The Escalation of Violence
The brothers of Ibrahim Gana, Mohammed Shaba and Mahmud Gana, allegedly blamed the Chief Imam for their brother’s death. In an act of mob violence, they mobilized several other individuals and launched an attack on the Imam using offensive weapons. This violent act ultimately led to the death of the Chief Imam.
Ejire-Adeyemi stated that the police responded swiftly to the incident, leading to the arrest of four suspects. However, efforts are still ongoing to apprehend others involved in the attack. “Four suspects have been arrested, and the command has commenced a full investigation into the incident. We assure the public that justice will be served,” she said.
A Strong Statement from the Police Commissioner
The Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, strongly condemned the act of jungle justice and warned residents against taking the law into their own hands. He emphasized that such behavior is “criminal and punishable under Nigerian law.”
“No one has the right to take another person’s life under any guise. Resorting to mob action only creates more tragedy and chaos. The command will not tolerate acts of lawlessness. Anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law.”
Ojo also urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with the authorities by providing useful information that could aid the investigation. “We appeal to members of the public to report any suspicious activity or individuals to the nearest police station or through the command’s designated emergency channels,” he added.
Commitment to Peace and Safety
The police boss assured residents of Kwara State that the police remain committed to ensuring peace, safety, and order across all communities, particularly in Edu LGA, where the incident occurred. “The Kwara State Police Command under my leadership will continue to uphold professionalism, integrity, and accountability in all its operations,” the CP affirmed.
Ongoing Investigation and Public Appeal
As the investigation continues, the police are urging the public to remain vigilant and assist in bringing those responsible to justice. The case highlights the importance of community cooperation and the need for legal processes to prevail over mob actions.
The police command remains dedicated to maintaining law and order, ensuring that every citizen feels safe and protected. Their commitment to transparency and accountability is a key aspect of their operations, as they work tirelessly to serve and protect the people of Kwara State.
