Germany expedites visa process for Nigerians — Consul-General

Germany’s Consul-General in Lagos Announces Visa Reforms and Expansion of Bilateral Cooperation

The Consul-General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Lagos, Mr. Daniel Krulls, has unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at significantly improving the efficiency of visa processing for Nigerian citizens. The goal is to ensure that all visa applications are processed within a maximum of three weeks, marking a major shift in how the German consulate operates.

During a recent media briefing, Krulls outlined his priorities as the new Consul-General, emphasizing the importance of strengthening economic, cultural, and educational ties between Germany and Nigeria. He noted that the Lagos Consulate currently handles over 10,000 visa applications annually and plans to expand its capacity through various reforms designed to enhance service delivery.

“Our main objective as a consulate is to be a facilitator — helping people from Germany and Nigeria connect,” Krulls stated. “One of the most important services we provide is the visa process, and we are expanding our office capacity to double the number of visa counters. With new counters and more staff, we aim to shorten processing times to no more than three weeks.”

Expanding Capacity and Enhancing Efficiency

To achieve this, the consulate is planning to introduce additional visa counters and increase staffing levels. This will allow for a more streamlined application process and reduce waiting times for applicants. Krulls also mentioned that the consulate intends to collaborate with external service providers for certain visa categories, which could further improve efficiency.

In addition, the consulate is working on establishing a verification system for academic diplomas to support faster processing for students applying for study visas. This initiative, which was previously piloted in New Delhi, India, successfully accelerated the decision-making process for study visas. Krulls confirmed that the same system will soon be implemented in Nigeria.

Strengthening Ties in Technology and Creative Industries

Beyond visa reforms, Krulls highlighted Germany’s interest in deepening collaboration in technology and the creative industries. He pointed out that there are significant opportunities for German IT companies to invest in Nigeria’s rapidly growing tech ecosystem.

He also emphasized the potential for partnerships in the film industry, noting that Germany is exploring co-productions with Nigeria’s Nollywood sector. Krulls acknowledged the global influence of Nigerian cinema and expressed hope that language barriers, which have historically limited Germany’s presence in the film sector, can be overcome.

“Germany is ready to support Nigerian creatives in securing royalties from international streaming platforms such as YouTube, Google, and Netflix,” he said.

Cultural Exchange and People-to-People Programs

On the topic of cultural exchange, Krulls revealed that both countries already run several people-to-people programs. One notable example is a film workshop where young movie students from Germany and Benin City collaborate on joint productions.

He reiterated Germany’s commitment to fostering stronger bilateral ties, describing Nigeria as a key partner in Africa’s social, cultural, and economic development.

Looking Ahead

With these new initiatives, the German Consulate in Lagos aims to not only improve the visa process but also deepen cooperation in multiple sectors. By focusing on efficiency, innovation, and cultural exchange, the consulate hopes to strengthen the relationship between Germany and Nigeria.
