Celebrating the Legacy of Kimberley Cricket
The Kimberley Sporting Legends Trust recently organized a special event to honor the province’s rich cricketing history and the players who played a pivotal role in shaping it. The celebration was a tribute to the individuals who contributed significantly to the development of cricket in the region.
Godfrey Erlank, the chairperson of the Trust, emphasized the purpose of the event, stating, “This event is about recognizing the extraordinary contributions of individuals who built the game of cricket in this province.” After months of meticulous planning, the event culminated in a grand gala at Elizabeth Conradie School in Kimberley, where numerous individuals and groups were honored.
A Weekend of Reconnection and Celebration
The weekend began on Friday with an informal meet and greet at KEW Bowls Club, where former players and their partners reconnected and shared stories from their cricketing days. The following day, guests visited the Kimberley Cricket Oval for interviews and photographs, followed by an engaging session with the Northern Cape Heat squad led by head coach Mduzi Mabatha.
On Saturday evening, the Gala Dinner took place, paying tribute to those who made significant contributions to cricket in the region. One of the most poignant moments was a moment of silence and a candle lighting ceremony, which allowed attendees to remember and honor those who had passed away and their impact on Kimberley Cricket.
Awards and Recognition
The list of accolades presented during the event was extensive and impressive. Senior provincial players were honored for their distinguished contributions to cricket, including names such as Shahid Alexander, Ishmael Akoojee, Phaldi Cader, Colin Crowie, Kingsley Erlank, Cyril Fredericks, Kenny Gordon, Charles Greef, Alexander Hannie, Roland Hermanus, Charles Jacobs, Ahmed Jinnah, Iqbal Kazie, Nathan Moodaley, Krishen Moodaley, Russell Moss, Howard Palm, Goolam Peerbhai, Stephen Rosier, Malcolm Rosier, Peter Salo, Terence Salo, Des Summers, and Owen Visser.
Special honors were given to Mr Yassiem Snyders, Ronnie Engelbrecht, Mr Abe Williams, Ralph Goodall, and Agie Patel for their exceptional contributions to both cricket and the community.
In addition, awards for outstanding administration were presented to Messrs Basil du Toit, Lloyd Louw, Barlin Moodaley, AK Bhayat, and Eugene Jacobs for their tireless efforts and dedication to the sport.
Honoring the South African Coloured Cricket Association
One of the highlights of the evening was the recognition of the South African Coloured Cricket Association team. This illustrious team included the late Mr RT Kader, Mr T Gertze, and Mr CD Jacobs. Attendees such as Mr A Williams, Mr R Goodall, Mr Yassiem Snyders, and Mr Ron Engelbrecht were present to celebrate their legacy. Additional appreciation was given to Mr B Du Toit and Mr L Louw for their roles as administrators.
Another memorable moment was the celebration of the 1988 Griqualand West team, which won the Booley Bowl in East London under the captaincy of Bernie Bennett.

For many, the names listed above may simply appear as a list of cricketers and administrators from years past. However, for those who shared the field and interacted with them in daily life, these individuals represent giants of their community and the game. Their contributions will always be remembered, celebrated, and honored.
