IFAD’s $30M Project Empowers 26,000 Nigerians

Overview of the LIFE-ND Project

The Livelihood Improvement Family Enterprises – Niger Delta (LIFE-ND) project has made significant strides in empowering communities across the Niger Delta region. According to the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), over 26,000 Nigerians have benefited from the $30 million investment in the first phase of the initiative. This program is designed to support youths and women by equipping them with practical skills in agribusiness, aiming to foster economic growth and food sovereignty.

Key Objectives and Approach

Dede Ekoue, the Country Director of IFAD, highlighted that the LIFE-ND project focuses on transforming the agricultural food system through a unique model of business incubation. This approach ensures that trainees not only gain knowledge but also develop the necessary skills to become successful business owners. Ekoue emphasized that the program is a vital step towards achieving Nigeria’s vision of food sovereignty, which cannot be realized without fully utilizing the potential of its youth.

She stated, “We are talking about agricultural food system transformation; it is a key topic on the global platform. Food sovereignty cannot be achieved without fully harnessing the potential of the youth in agric.”

Empowering Youth and Women

The program places a strong emphasis on empowering young people and women, who play a crucial role in food production and nutrition. Ekoue noted that the youth represent the largest population segment and that their involvement is essential for sustainable development. By providing them with the tools and resources needed to establish agricultural businesses, the project aims to create jobs and stimulate economic growth.

She added, “Creating jobs for youths is the key to enabling growth; it is the key to peace; it is the key to development; it is the key to business growth.”

In addition to supporting youths, the project also focuses on women, recognizing their critical role in food production, transformation, and ensuring proper nutrition. LIFE-ND is delivering tangible results by integrating these groups into the agricultural sector and promoting gender equality.

Expansion and Impact

Dr Abiodun Sanni, the National Coordinator of the LIFE-ND project, shared that the first phase of the program covered six states: Ondo, Edo, Abia, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Delta. These regions saw the participation of young agro-entrepreneurs, youths, women, and persons with disabilities. Sanni expressed his commitment to the project’s transformative agenda, which aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He disclosed that 4,380 beneficiaries are currently being enlisted in the ongoing phase of the program, indicating its continued expansion and impact.

Collaboration and Commitment

Stella Manureh, a representative of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), praised the collaborative efforts of IFAD and other stakeholders in improving the lives of the Niger Delta people. She emphasized the importance of food security and the role of agriculture in enhancing livelihoods.

Manureh stated, “IFAD, your continued investment in agriculture has improved the livelihood of the people. It enforces our collective responsibility for transparency and accountability.”

Conclusion

The LIFE-ND project stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in addressing challenges related to food security and youth unemployment. By focusing on skill development, business incubation, and inclusivity, the program is making a lasting impact on the lives of participants and contributing to the broader goals of sustainable development in the Niger Delta region.
