Kawala Takes Over as Kampala Police Spokesperson

New Spokesperson Appointed for Kampala Metropolitan Police

SP Rachael Kawala has been appointed as the new spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP), succeeding SSP Patrick Onyango, who held the position for eight years. The announcement was made by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abas Byakagaba, as part of a broader police reshuffle. This move marks a significant shift in leadership and communication strategies within the KMP.

Before her appointment, Kawala served as the Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson, where she gained recognition for her professionalism, effective communication skills, and ability to maintain strong relationships between the police and the media. Her experience and track record have positioned her well for the new role.

SSP Onyango, who returned to the KMP spokesperson position in 2018 after a brief transfer in 2016, is credited with modernizing police-media engagement and enhancing transparency during his tenure. His efforts contributed to improved public perception of the police force and set a foundation for future communication strategies.

In her new position, Kawala will be deputized by ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, who will continue supporting the metropolitan communication operations. Meanwhile, Lamek Kigozi has been appointed to take over Kawala’s former role as Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson. This transition ensures continuity in the communication efforts across different regions.

The Police Spokesperson, Rusoke, confirmed the appointment of SP Kawala and mentioned that SSP have been taken to the Press and Publication department. This step highlights the importance of maintaining accurate and timely information dissemination to the public.

Observers believe that Kawala’s appointment signals a renewed focus on timely public communication, media engagement, and fostering trust between the police and Kampala’s residents. Her background and experience are seen as assets that can further strengthen the relationship between the police and the community.

Role of the Police Spokesperson

The Kampala Metropolitan Police is Uganda’s largest police command, responsible for maintaining law and order across the capital and its suburbs. The spokesperson’s office plays a critical role in disseminating updates on security, law enforcement operations, and community policing initiatives. Effective communication is essential in ensuring public awareness and cooperation in maintaining safety and order.

With the appointment of SP Kawala, there is an expectation of enhanced transparency and more proactive engagement with the media and the public. Her leadership is anticipated to bring a fresh perspective and innovative approaches to police-community relations.

Future Outlook

As SP Kawala steps into her new role, the focus will likely be on improving the efficiency of communication channels and ensuring that the public receives accurate and up-to-date information. This includes regular press briefings, social media engagement, and direct interaction with community leaders and media representatives.

The success of this transition will depend on the ability of the KMP to adapt to changing communication trends and effectively address the concerns of the public. With the support of ASP Luke Owoyesigyire and the continued efforts of other officers, there is hope for a more transparent and responsive police force.
