The Rise of Democratic Socialism in New York
Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old who identifies as a ‘Democratic Socialist,’ delivered a powerful speech following his confirmation as the mayor of New York City. In his address, he quoted the late American socialist leader Eugene Debs, saying, “The dawn of a better day for humanity is breaking.” Mamdani emphasized that New York’s workers have long been told by the powerful and wealthy, “Power is not yours,” and declared, “The era of politics that abandoned the majority and only responded to the few is over.” His words reflect the core tenets of democratic socialism, which seeks to challenge the existing power structures and advocate for the working class.
Understanding Democratic Socialism
Democratic socialism is a political ideology that originated in 19th-century Europe. It stands in contrast to capitalism, which upholds individual private ownership of property. In contrast, democratic socialism promotes collective ownership of key resources such as land, factories, and other means of production. Unlike Leninism, which advocates for a violent revolution to overthrow the capitalist system, democratic socialism aims to achieve its goals through democratic processes within the framework of parliamentary politics.
Mamdani’s policy proposals, including freezing apartment rents, raising the minimum wage, providing free bus fares, and expanding access to free childcare, are all grounded in socialist principles. These measures reflect a commitment to addressing economic inequality and improving the lives of everyday citizens.
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA)
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), the organization to which Mamdani belongs, was founded in 1982. Its primary objectives include uniting small socialist groups across the United States, shifting the Democratic Party toward the left, and promoting grassroots activism. According to the DSA’s website, the organization views capitalism as a system designed to allow asset holders to exploit the rest of society. It calls for the replacement of this system with democratic socialism.
Prior to 2015, the DSA had only around 6,000 members. However, the 2011 “Occupy Wall Street” movement, which popularized the slogan “We are the 99%,” sparked widespread discontent among young people. This sentiment was further amplified during the 2016 Democratic primaries when Bernie Sanders, an 84-year-old democratic socialist, gained significant support. His campaign inspired many young voters to seek a progressive political platform, leading to a surge in DSA membership.
Mamdani joined the DSA around this time, and since then, the organization has grown into one of the largest progressive political groups in the U.S., with over 90,000 members. The DSA has produced notable figures such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC). The grassroots efforts that supported Mamdani’s mayoral campaign were also backed by the DSA, highlighting the growing influence of democratic socialism in American politics.
A Global Movement
Zack Polanski, leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, referred to Mamdani as the “British Mamdani” and commented on the global significance of his election. On the 5th, Polanski stated, “Mamdani’s victory seems to resonate worldwide,” adding, “The significance of this election is recognizing the inequality entrenched in the heart of New York, and such inequality exists in a significant part of the world.”
This sentiment underscores the broader appeal of democratic socialism, which addresses systemic issues of inequality and economic disparity. As Mamdani’s victory demonstrates, the movement is gaining momentum not just in the U.S., but across the globe.
