Museveni Warns Elgon Residents of Disaster Threats

President Museveni Addresses Disaster Risks in Mount Elgon Region

President Yoweri Museveni has issued a strong warning to residents of the Mount Elgon region, emphasizing the importance of taking disaster risks seriously. His concerns are centered around the increasing threat of landslides and the impact of deforestation on the fragile environment. The President also pledged renewed government action to protect vulnerable communities living in these high-risk areas.

During a public rally in Bulambuli District, President Museveni highlighted the urgent need for disaster preparedness and environmental conservation efforts on Mount Elgon. He pointed out that continued settlement on unstable slopes has repeatedly led to tragic loss of life in the region. “Deforestation on Mount Elgon is worsening soil instability and water run-off,” he said. “It is like undressing one’s mother,” he added, urging communities to restore tree cover and strengthen local enforcement to protect the mountain ecosystem, which he described as the region’s “life source.”

The President was accompanied by several key figures, including Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, Eastern Region NRM Vice Chairperson Calvin Echodu, and Party Secretary General Richard Todwong. Their presence underscored the significance of the event and the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the region.

Earlier in the day, NRM Bulambuli Chairperson Paul Kimamati presented a memorandum outlining critical issues affecting the area. The document highlighted gaps in disaster response, delayed resettlement of landslide victims, and infrastructure challenges that have hindered progress in the region.

In response to these concerns, President Museveni reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the relocation of families affected by landslides. He also pledged to compensate communities that were impacted by cattle raids in the 1980s. Additionally, the President announced plans to reinforce highland roads using cobblestone technology to reduce erosion risks and improve safety for residents.

As climate pressures continue to intensify across Mount Elgon, the President’s message in Bulambuli emphasized the importance of environmental protection and community safety. These issues are expected to be central to his engagements across the Bugisu sub-region in the coming months.

Key Government Initiatives

  • Disaster Preparedness:The government is focusing on improving early warning systems and community education to mitigate the impact of natural disasters.
  • Environmental Conservation:Efforts are being made to restore tree cover and promote sustainable land use practices to prevent further soil degradation.
  • Infrastructure Development:Investment in road construction and maintenance is a priority to ensure safer travel and better access to essential services.
  • Community Support:Financial compensation and relocation programs are being expanded to assist those affected by past and ongoing environmental challenges.

Challenges and Future Outlook

Despite these initiatives, several challenges remain. The delayed resettlement of landslide victims continues to be a pressing issue, with many families still living in temporary shelters. Infrastructure development is also hampered by limited resources and logistical difficulties in remote areas.

Looking ahead, the government aims to strengthen partnerships with local communities, non-governmental organizations, and international agencies to address these challenges more effectively. The focus will be on creating resilient communities that can withstand the impacts of climate change and natural disasters.
