Namibia Recognized as Africa’s Top Adventure Tourism Destination

Namibia has been honored as Africa’s best adventure tourism destination at the 2025 Africa Tourism Awards, also known as The Balearica Awards. This prestigious event took place in London on 2 November and celebrated outstanding achievements in the African tourism sector.

The recognition specifically highlighted Swakopmund as Namibia’s adventure capital, showcasing the city’s unique blend of natural beauty, thrilling activities, and cultural richness. The award celebrates the country’s success in promoting adventure tourism, sustainability, and authentic African experiences. It also acknowledges Namibia’s innovative approaches, positive community impact, and strong environmental stewardship within the tourism industry.

Sebulon Chicalu, Chief Executive of the Namibia Tourism Board (NTB), expressed his pride in receiving this continental recognition. He emphasized that the award reinforces Namibia’s position as a premier adventure destination, particularly highlighting Swakopmund’s role in this achievement. “We are deeply honored to receive this recognition. This award reflects our commitment to sustainable, community-based, and innovative tourism that benefits both visitors and local communities,” he said.

The ceremony was held at the Hilton London Canary Wharf and brought together representatives from tourism boards, ministers, airlines, and hospitality brands across Africa. Namibia stood out among several strong contenders, showcasing its excellence in the field of adventure tourism.

Chicalu mentioned that this accolade supports the NTB’s efforts to position Namibia as a world-class adventure and ecotourism destination. This aligns with the country’s Vision 2030 and the sixth National Development Plan. “This award is not only a win for Namibia, but also for every community and operator contributing to our tourism success story. It inspires us to keep raising the bar and to welcome the world to experience the adventure of Namibia,” he added.

The Balearica Awards, named after the crowned crane (Balearica regulorum), honor excellence in Africa’s tourism industry.
