New Leadership in the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church
The Romanian Greek-Catholic Church has welcomed a new leader, with Bishop Claudiu Lucian Pop being appointed as the Major Archbishop. This position had been vacant since the passing of Cardinal Lucian Mureșan in September of this year, at the age of 94. The appointment was made official during an extraordinary session of the Synod of Bishops held in Rome on Thursday, November 6, at the Pontifical Romanian College Pio Romeno.
The election of the new Major Archbishop received confirmation from Pope Leon XIV, following canonical procedures outlined in the official press release. This marks a significant moment for the Romanian Church United with Rome, which represents a major branch of the Eastern Catholic Churches.
Background and Education
Claudiu Lucian Pop was born in 1972 in the locality of Pișcolt, located in Satu Mare County. He attended elementary school in Jibou and later graduated from the local high school. In 1990, he began his studies at the Faculty of Chemistry in Bucharest but soon shifted his focus to theology.
In 1991, he received a scholarship to study in Rome, where he enrolled at the Pontifical College Pio Romeno. His academic journey continued between 1991 and 1999, during which he studied Philosophy at the Pontifical Urban University and Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University. He earned a Licentiate in Spiritual Theology in 1998 and a Doctorate in 2006.
Priesthood and Ecclesiastical Roles
Pop was ordained a priest on July 23, 1995. From 1997 to 1999, he was responsible for the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church in Rome, specifically at Santissimo Salvatore alle Coppelle. Between 1999 and 2001, he served as vice-rector of the Romanian Greek-Catholic Mission in Paris, and then as rector of the same institution from 2001 until December 2007.
On December 12, 2007, he was appointed Rector of the Pontifical College Pio Romeno in Rome. In 2011, he was elected bishop of the Curia of the Major Archdiocese, and was subsequently proclaimed bishop by Pope Benedict XVI and Cardinal Lucian Mureșan.
Contributions and Key Moments
Pop played a key role in coordinating Pope Francis’ visit to Blaj on June 2, 2019. This event was a significant moment for the Romanian Greek-Catholic community, highlighting the importance of the church’s presence in the country.
In April 2021, after receiving the consent of the Synod of Bishops of the Romanian Church United with Rome, Greek-Catholic, and following communication with the Holy Apostolic See of Rome, Cardinal Lucian Mureșan transferred him to the position of Eparchial Bishop of the Eparchy of Cluj-Gherla.
Future Prospects
With the appointment of Claudiu Lucian Pop as the new Major Archbishop, the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church is poised for a period of leadership and growth. His extensive background in theology, ecclesiastical administration, and pastoral care positions him well to guide the church through future challenges and opportunities.
As the church continues its mission, the leadership of the new Major Archbishop will be crucial in maintaining the traditions and values that have defined the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church for generations.
