Nigeria’s Democracy in Peril – Damagum

Concerns Over Nigeria’s Democracy

The National Chairman of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, has expressed deep concerns about the current state of Nigeria’s democratic system. He highlighted that the country is facing serious threats from individuals and groups attempting to undermine its democratic foundations.

During a speech in Bauchi on Saturday, Damagum assured citizens that the PDP is prepared to take action to protect the nation’s future by 2027. He stated that Nigeria’s democracy is currently under pressure due to various challenges, including governance failures, insecurity, and economic difficulties. According to him, these issues require immediate political attention and intervention.

“The PDP, as a major opposition party with a nationwide presence, is well-positioned to restore confidence in democratic institutions and safeguard the will of the people,” he said.

Preparations for the PDP National Convention

Damagum also shared updates on the preparations for the upcoming PDP National Convention. He confirmed that the process is progressing smoothly without any internal conflicts or distractions. The party has made solid arrangements to ensure a successful and peaceful convention, which he described as a defining moment for the PDP and for Nigeria’s political future.

He emphasized that the convention will be a crucial step in shaping the party’s direction and strengthening its role in national politics. “The PDP is committed to ensuring that the convention is conducted in a transparent and inclusive manner,” he added.

Call for Unity and Support

In his address, Damagum called on Nigerians to unite behind the PDP and support its vision for the country. He urged citizens to rally around the party’s ideals and work together to reclaim Nigeria from what he described as misgovernance.

“Democracy thrives only when citizens defend it. The PDP will continue to engage Nigerians across all levels to ensure that our democratic system is protected and strengthened,” he stressed.

Commitment to Accountability and Economic Revival

The PDP National Chairman reiterated the party’s commitment to accountability, economic revival, and the welfare of citizens. He encouraged stakeholders to remain steadfast in their support for the party’s goals.

“Economic revival and good governance are central to our platform. We are determined to bring about positive change and ensure that every Nigerian benefits from a stable and prosperous society,” he said.

A Stronger Future for Nigeria

Damagum concluded by assuring the public that the PDP will continue to engage with Nigerians at all levels. He emphasized that the party remains focused on protecting and strengthening the democratic system.

As the political landscape in Nigeria continues to evolve, the PDP’s role as a key opposition force becomes increasingly important. With its commitment to transparency, accountability, and national unity, the party aims to play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s future.
