Oyo Gov Approves Major Road Rebuilds and Infrastructure Projects

Oyo State Government Launches Major Infrastructure Projects

The Oyo State government has reaffirmed its commitment to infrastructural transformation across the state by approving several major road reconstruction projects. These initiatives aim to enhance connectivity among the six geo-political zones, ensuring smoother transportation and better access to essential services.

This development came after a meeting of the State Executive Council, where key infrastructure projects were given the green light for execution. Among the approved projects are the 30-kilometre Igboho–Kishi road in Oke-Ogun and the 38.9-kilometre Ido–Akufo–Eruwa road in Ibarapa. The council’s decisions reflect a strategic focus on improving the state’s infrastructure, which is crucial for economic growth and social development.

Road Reconstruction Projects Approved

The reconstruction of the 30km Igboho–Kishi road was approved at a cost of N38,689,548,227.66. This project is expected to significantly improve transport links in the Oke-Ogun area, facilitating easier movement of people and goods. Similarly, the reconstruction of the 39km Ido–Akufo junction–Eruwa road will be executed at a cost of N50,344,692,765.50. These roads are vital for connecting different parts of the state and promoting regional integration.

According to the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, these projects are part of the major highlights of the Executive Council’s approvals aimed at further improving infrastructures across the state. The council’s decision underscores its dedication to enhancing the quality of life for residents through improved infrastructure.

Energy Sector Developments

In addition to road projects, the council also approved the construction, installation, distribution, operation, and maintenance of the 12MW Ibadan Independent Gas Power Plant Project at a cost of N27,338,650,000 (twenty-seven billion, three hundred and thirty-eight million, six hundred and fifty thousand naira). This initiative is expected to provide uninterrupted electricity to critical government facilities such as the Oyo State Secretariat, Government House, Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS), High Courts, State Hospitals, and Lekan Salami Stadium, among others.

Following the completion of the earlier approved installation of high mast floodlights in parts of the state, the council has also approved another award for a hybrid power system at a cost of N8,967,895,436.26. This project aims to extend the benefits of reliable power to selected key areas within the Ibadan metropolis.

Education and Other Initiatives

On the education front, the council approved the release of N3,554,642,584 as counterpart funding to facilitate the disbursement of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) matching grant to Oyo State for the 2024 UBEC/SUBEB Intervention Project. This funding is crucial for supporting basic education initiatives and improving access to quality education.

Additionally, the council approved the remodelling and reconstruction of the uncompleted library building located behind the Government House, which has been abandoned for about 25 years. The project will be undertaken at a cost of N3,787,371,025. The release also stated that a total sum of N221,021,000 was approved for the conduct of the second and third term unified examinations for public primary schools across the state.

Additional Infrastructure Projects

Other approvals include the construction of an office building for the Oyo State Anti-Corruption Agency (OYACA) at a cost of N1,334,603,000 and the construction of a permanent site for the Nigeria Mobile Police Squadron located in Ago-Are, Oke-Ogun Zone, at a cost of N5,858,061,682.31. It is worth noting that the state government had previously requested the establishment of the Mobile Police Squadron to strengthen security and quell banditry activities in the Oke-Ogun area.

These projects highlight the government’s ongoing efforts to address various challenges and improve the overall quality of life in Oyo State. Through continued investment in infrastructure, energy, and education, the state is working towards sustainable development and progress.
