Police impose lockdown in Anambra, restrict traffic before governorship vote

Enhanced Security Measures for Anambra State Governorship Election

The Anambra State Police Command has implemented a comprehensive restriction on vehicular movement across the state and all interstate highways on Saturday, 8th November 2025. This measure is part of heightened security efforts to ensure a smooth and secure governorship election process.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, the restriction will be in effect from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Election Day. The directive aims to prevent the movement of political thugs and criminal elements who could potentially disrupt the electoral process.

The decision was made during a joint security meeting held on 5th November 2025 at the Police State Headquarters in Awka. This meeting brought together heads of all security agencies operating within the state to coordinate efforts and address potential challenges.

Scope of the Restriction

The ban applies to all forms of motorised transport, including private and commercial vehicles, trucks, tricycles, motorcycles, and shuttle buses. This wide-ranging restriction is intended to limit the ability of any disruptive groups to move freely and interfere with the election.

However, certain exemptions have been granted to individuals engaged in essential duties. These include:

  • Accredited INEC officials
  • Journalists
  • Election observers
  • Medical personnel
  • Emergency responders
  • Essential service providers

Those falling under these categories must carry valid identification and clearance tags at all times to ensure compliance with the regulation.

Encouraging Compliance and Cooperation

SP Ikenga Tochukwu urged residents and travellers to strictly adhere to the restriction. He emphasized that the measure is designed to safeguard lives and property and create a peaceful voting atmosphere where citizens can freely choose their preferred candidates.

He also highlighted that adequate security personnel have been deployed across the 21 local government areas to enforce compliance and maintain order throughout the election process. The police command called on the electorate to remain law-abiding and cooperate fully with security operatives to ensure the success of the election.

Advice for Travelers

In addition, the police advised interstate travellers to take alternative routes to avoid inconvenience during the restriction period. This advice is aimed at minimizing disruptions and ensuring that essential travel can continue without unnecessary delays.

Conclusion

The Anambra State Police Command’s decision to restrict vehicular movement reflects a proactive approach to securing the governorship election. By limiting the movement of potential disruptors and ensuring the presence of security personnel, the authorities are working to create an environment conducive to free and fair voting.

As the election day approaches, it is crucial for all stakeholders to support these measures and contribute to a successful and peaceful electoral process. The cooperation of the public and the adherence to regulations will play a vital role in achieving this goal.
