Police recover millions in dagga in Northern Cape

Major Drug Seizure in Namakwa District

In a significant operation, the police in the Namakwa district intercepted a large quantity of dagga during routine patrols in Steinkopf on Thursday morning, November 5. The seized drugs are estimated to have a street value of R7.7 million. This seizure highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to tackle drug-related crimes in the region.

Two individuals, both aged 33, were arrested and are currently in custody. They were taken into custody by alert police officers who noticed a suspicious vehicle carrying boxes on its back. The officers’ vigilance led to the discovery of a substantial amount of illegal narcotics.

According to the reports, members of C Relief from Steinkopf SAPS were conducting patrols at the N7-R382 junction near Steinkopf when they spotted the vehicle. Upon inspecting the vehicle, the police found dagga weighing approximately 64,800kg. The vehicle was also seized as it was used in the commission of the crime.

The suspects are expected to face charges related to drug dealing in court soon. Brigadier Schalk Andrews, the District Commissioner, praised the police for their quick action. He stated, “The vigilance and professionalism displayed by the members involved prevented the distribution of illegal narcotics from reaching our communities.”

Captain Ivan Magerman, the SAPS Namakwa Communications Officer, emphasized the importance of this success. He said, “This major success reaffirms and demonstrates the SAPS’ continued commitment to combating drug trafficking and other related crimes in the Namakwa district.”
