Ruth Odinga’s Coded Warning After Kalonzo’s Opoda Farm Visit: “We Won’t Be Bought”

ODM’s Unity and Independence Reaffirmed by Ruth Odinga

Ruth Odinga, the Kisumu woman representative and sister of the late Raila Odinga, has reaffirmed the Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) unity and independence, declaring that the party “is not for sale.” Her remarks came in response to recent political developments and have been interpreted as a strong message to both allies and rivals within Kenyan politics.

The statement was made following a visit by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to the Odinga family home in Bondo. During this visit, Musyoka paid tribute to the late Raila Odinga, sparking renewed discussions about ODM’s future direction. Ruth praised Musyoka’s gesture as a sign of solidarity and long-standing loyalty to Raila’s democratic struggle, highlighting their shared history in multiple presidential campaigns.

Her words were seen as a coded message regarding ODM’s 2027 strategy, emphasizing that the party would seek guidance from its supporters. This approach reflects the party’s roots in the 2005 referendum campaign that gave birth to the Orange movement, reinforcing its identity as a party “by the people, for the people.”

A Symbolic Gesture with Deeper Implications

In her statement, Ruth emphasized that Kalonzo’s visit was more than symbolic. She described it as a reaffirmation of shared ideals and a deep commitment to Kenya’s democratic journey. “It takes a warrior to recognize one,” she said. “Today, I was honored to welcome the Wiper Party Leader, H.E. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, to Opoda Farm as he came to pay his last respects to the late Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, a man with whom he stood side by side in three different elections.”

Kalonzo led an elaborate delegation of hundreds, which Ruth viewed as a testament to the bond between him and Raila. The meeting brought together several political figures and supporters, reigniting debates about ODM’s position in the evolving political landscape leading up to the 2027 General Election.

A Message to Supporters and Political Allies

Ruth’s closing remarks captured national attention, as they were interpreted as a coded message to both political allies and rivals. She reinforced ODM’s democratic credentials and its origins in the 2005 referendum campaign, stating that the party would listen to its supporters. “As a founding member of the ODM Party, I want to assure our supporters across the country that the Orange Party remains united and resolute, and that is how we will approach the 2027 elections.”

She added, “This is a party by the people, for the people, and when the time comes, it is to the people that we shall return for guidance. ODM is not for sale. We cannot, and will not be bought.”

Her comments sparked a wide range of reactions from Kenyans, with many interpreting them as a strong stance against external influences on the party.

Public Reactions and Interpretations

Among the public responses, Leshan Beth wrote: “Ongeza volume mamaa, ambia Orengo ashikilie hapo tuu. Vijana wetu young Turks Babu, Sifuna, wapewe support with the party, they have the energy we need to go places.”

Mwangi Mwangiz remarked: “That’s it’s in that cycle of politics only kalonzo was raila friend others are Haynes.”

Erustus Kombulu noted: “Governor Gladys Wanga internalise this information for us who loved Baba. Kalonzo stood with the late Raila for 15 political years when those you are now calling friends were baying for his blood. Rip Jakom.”

Thomas Joseph Tj stated: “I’m happy that Ruth Odinga recognizes that ODM is the party of the people of Kenya. She will have to convince the delegates just like anyone else to agree with her opinion on any issues.”

Modikayo Oluoch commented: “It won’t be business as usual, politicians won’t decide for a whole community thinking we shall follow their footsteps blindly. We know where we are coming from, where we are and where are going.”

Abdi Arap Asman added: “A very strong statement for those who can analyze, there is a deeper meaning of matters objectives. ODM foot-caretayari.”

Internal Struggles and Uncertainty

Ruth’s sentiments further underscored a deep unease within ODM ranks over the party’s collaboration with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA). The partnership, formalized through a memorandum of understanding, was intended to foster stability and national dialogue after the Gen Z-led deadly protests of 2024.

However, many remain skeptical about the party’s ideological identity and independence in the absence of Raila’s guiding hand. Since his passing, ODM has appeared uncertain about its next steps, with senior members issuing conflicting statements on whether the party should back Ruto’s re-election bid.

Despite these challenges, Ruth’s declaration of unity and independence signals a determination to maintain the party’s core values while navigating the complex political landscape ahead.
