Leadership Transition at Samsung Electronics

Chung Hyun-ho, the Vice Chairman of Samsung Electronics, who was often referred to as the “second-in-command of Samsung,” has stepped down from his frontline management role. This significant change in leadership came as part of a broader restructuring within the company.

Samsung Electronics announced on the 7th that Chung, who had been leading the Business Support Task Force (TF)—a key organization responsible for overseeing its electronics affiliates—has retired and will now serve as an advisor to the company’s chairman. The announcement was made ahead of the year-end personnel changes. It is understood that Chung expressed his desire to step down in order to focus on nurturing successors, especially as the company’s performance improves and operations become more stable.

Restructuring of the Business Support TF

The temporary Business Support TF has undergone a transformation and has now been restructured into a permanent organization known as the Business Support Division. This marks the formal establishment of the TF, which was initially launched in November 2017 following the dissolution of the former Future Strategy Office. After eight years, this new division represents a significant shift in organizational structure.

Park Hark-kyu, a former member of the TF, has been appointed as the new head of the Business Support Division. His appointment signals a continuation of the division’s strategic direction while also bringing in fresh perspectives.

New Leadership Appointments

Several key appointments have been made to lead different teams within the newly established Business Support Division:

  • Choi Yoon-ho, the former head of the Management Diagnosis Office, has been named head of the Business Support Division’s Strategy Team.
  • Joo Chang-hoon, a former TF Vice President, will lead the Management Diagnosis Team.
  • Moon Hee-dong, another TF Vice President, will oversee the People Team.

These appointments reflect a deliberate effort to consolidate various functions that were previously spread across different departments inside and outside Samsung Electronics. The goal is to create a more streamlined and efficient organizational structure.

A company spokesperson stated, “The new Business Support Division, composed of three teams, is significantly smaller than the former Future Strategy Office and merely consolidates existing functions.
