Senate Committee Addresses Key Health Sector Issues
The Senate Standing Committee on National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination met at Parliament House on Wednesday to discuss critical matters related to the health sector. The meeting was chaired by Senator Amir Waliuddin Chishti and included discussions on several important topics, including the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Amendment) Bill, 2025, the progress of polio eradication efforts, and the performance of the National Council for Homeopathy (NCH).
Balancing Investor Confidence and Public Welfare
During the session, the Committee emphasized the importance of maintaining a balance between investor confidence and public welfare. It called on the Ministry of National Health Services to ensure that essential medicines remain affordable while also addressing the need for transparency in medicine pricing. The Committee urged the ministry to justify any increases in wages or production costs, ensuring that these adjustments do not lead to higher prices for consumers.
Review of DRAP Amendment Bill
The discussion on the DRAP Amendment Bill focused on its nationwide implications. Senator Chishti highlighted the significance of regulatory changes and stressed the need for a cautious and structured approach to reform. He emphasized that any modifications to the existing framework should be carefully evaluated to avoid unintended consequences.
The Minister for Health assured the Committee that all stakeholders, including the incoming administration, would be consulted during the implementation of the bill. This consultation process aims to maintain system stability and ensure that the proposed reforms align with the broader goals of the health sector.
Polio Eradication Efforts
The Committee expressed concern over the persistence of the polio virus in certain regions, including Karachi, Lahore, and southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Senator Chishti stressed that vaccination efforts must be complemented by improvements in sanitation and localized awareness campaigns. He suggested that parliamentarians produce regional-language videos to enhance public engagement and address misconceptions about vaccination.
These initiatives aim to increase trust in the vaccination program and encourage greater participation from communities that have been hesitant to engage with immunization efforts.
Enhancing Homeopathy Regulation
The review of the National Council for Homeopathy (NCH) focused on the need for swift reforms to improve curriculum standards and promote research in the field of homeopathy. The Committee also called for measures to curb unauthorized practice, which could undermine the credibility of the profession.
Senator Chishti reiterated the importance of strengthening the homeopathy regulatory framework to ensure that educational and professional standards are maintained. This includes updating training programs and establishing stricter guidelines for practitioners.
Key Attendees
The meeting was attended by several prominent senators, including Dr. Zarqa Suharwardy Taimur, Rubina Khalid, Samina Mumtaz Zehri, Anusha Rahman Ahmad Khan, Dilawar Khan, and Syed Masroor Ahsan. The Minister for National Health Services and senior officials also participated in the discussions.
