Severe Storm Fung-Wong Near Hong Kong Early Next Week

A severe tropical storm is expected to impact Hong Kong in the coming week. The storm is anticipated to come within 800 kilometers of the territory on Monday, as reported by the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO).

The storm, named Fung-Wong in Cantonese which translates to “phoenix,” was located approximately 2,630 kilometers east of Hong Kong on Friday. According to the HKO, it will approach the city over the next few days. The storm is expected to intensify gradually from a typhoon to a super typhoon as it moves westward, passing over Luzon Island before heading toward Hong Kong. It is predicted to enter within an 800-kilometer radius of Hong Kong on Monday and reach its closest point to the city on Wednesday.

“Under the influence of a dry northeast monsoon early to midweek next week, Fung-Wong will weaken gradually,” the HKO stated on Friday. “However, the location of its turn and its rate of weakening remain uncertain. Under the combined effect of the monsoon and Fung-Wong, the weather will be windy and slightly cooler over the coast of southeastern China midweek next week.”

According to the HKO forecast, the maximum sustained winds near the center of Fung-Wong are expected to decrease from 195 kilometers per hour on Sunday to 105 kilometers per hour by next Wednesday.

The weather conditions on Saturday will begin with sunny periods and one or two patches of rain. As the week progresses, the weather is expected to become rainier and cooler by Wednesday and Thursday. This shift in weather patterns highlights the potential for significant changes in conditions across the region, prompting residents and authorities to stay informed and prepared for possible disruptions.
