Small parties unite to push for inclusive representation

Coalition of Smaller Political Parties Unites to Protect Democratic Participation

A coalition of smaller political parties has taken a significant step towards ensuring their continued involvement in the country’s democratic process. This initiative was announced in Naivasha, following the elections of the Political Parties Liaison Committee (PPLC) National Steering Committee. The coalition, formed through a memorandum of understanding, aims to address the challenges faced by non-parliamentary parties and advocate for fair treatment within the political system.

The coalition expressed concerns over increasing administrative hurdles that have made it difficult for smaller parties to operate effectively. These challenges include alleged difficulties in accessing public funding and heightened compliance scrutiny from the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP). The parties involved emphasized their commitment to pursuing both legal and political avenues to ensure they are treated fairly under the law.

Leadership and Vision

Augustus Kyalo Muli, the leader of the National Liberal Party (NLP), has been appointed as the coalition’s spokesperson. Muli pledged to lead the effort in protecting Kenya’s multi-party democracy, which he described as being under severe threat. His statement highlighted the importance of unity among smaller parties as they prepare for the 2027 elections.

“Our commitment for multiparty democracy is still alive. We will come together especially as we prepare for 2027 elections, we assure the country that we still believe in democracy,” Muli said. He also vowed to resist any attempts to undermine the political space for smaller parties, which he noted have been marginalized and left without adequate funding.

Collective Resolve

Rose Mulwa, the leader of the Empowerment and Liberation Party (ELP), echoed the coalition’s determination to protect the existence of parties without parliamentary representation. She emphasized that the coalition represents a united front aimed at safeguarding the interests of all parties, regardless of their current status in the political arena.

“Today we are forming an opposition body where we are going to safeguard the parties. We did not lose because we are weak, we lost because we stand for the right thing,” Mulwa stated. Her words reflect the coalition’s belief in the strength of collective action and the importance of standing firm in the face of adversity.

Justus Juma, the leader of the Justice and Freedom Party, added that the coalition is committed to preserving Kenya’s multi-party framework. He called on Kenyans to support the coalition’s efforts, stating that unity among emerging parties would lead to positive change, particularly in addressing economic challenges.

“As we have united today, we know as emerging parties that we will be protected if we stand together. So, let’s stand together and we ask you Kenyans to stand with us. If you stand with us, our problems especially regarding the economy will change,” Juma said.

Significance of the Coalition

The formation of this coalition marks a coordinated effort by smaller political parties to assert their role in the country’s political landscape. It signals a growing awareness of the need for equitable treatment within the nation’s democratic institutions. By coming together, these parties aim to create a stronger voice that can influence policy and ensure that their perspectives are heard.

This initiative reflects a broader movement among smaller parties to challenge the status quo and advocate for a more inclusive political environment. As they continue to work together, the coalition may play a crucial role in shaping the future of Kenya’s democracy.
