Two white students from Windhoek, who dressed in blackface at a Halloween party, have faced severe consequences after a public outcry. The incident has led to their suspension, with one of the students also losing his sponsorship as a cyclist. This event has sparked significant debate and raised questions about racial insensitivity and the implications of such actions.

The controversy began when a photo of the students was shared on social media, featuring them with ‘Kffr 1′ and ‘Kffr 2′ tags on their vests. These terms are widely recognized as offensive slurs against Black people, particularly associated with the legacy of apartheid. The image quickly drew criticism from many users, highlighting the deep-seated issues of racism that still persist in society.

The Halloween party took place on private property last Friday, and it is reported that black pupils felt “mocked and uncomfortable” during the event. Concerned parents have since lodged complaints with the authorities, further intensifying the situation.

Educational Authorities Respond

Edda Bohn, the Education Executive Director, confirmed that the two students, who attend different schools in Windhoek, have been suspended. She emphasized that they will not be allowed on school premises but will still be permitted to sit for their examinations.

Bohn stated that the ministry is conducting an investigation into the matter and has taken disciplinary action. She noted that such violations of the Constitution are unacceptable and that an official media statement would soon be issued.

She also denied allegations that the ministry advised one of the schools to take legal action against the media if the school’s name was published. Bohn asserted that the matter has become public and that the ministry will maintain a public stance, regardless of any attempts to suppress the discussion.

Sponsorship Terminated

Hollard Namibia, which had sponsored one of the students as a cyclist, has terminated the sponsorship following the incident. Sam Kauapirura, the spokesperson for Hollard Namibia, informed the student of this decision. He emphasized the importance of upholding values and the impact of such actions on the community.

Legal and Social Reactions

Legal experts have weighed in on the incident, highlighting the serious nature of the slur used. Wesele Chikwililwa, a lawyer from Monika Angula & Associates Inc., stated that imitating other races is considered an insult to one’s dignity. He pointed out that the term used by the students carries a negative connotation and is deeply rooted in the history of discrimination and racial subjugation.

John Walters, a retired lawyer and ombudsman, echoed these sentiments. He suggested that the affected black pupils could file complaints with the ombudsman against those responsible. He stressed that calling someone a kffr violates a person’s dignity and that the ombudsman can help resolve such matters amicably.

School Response

In a letter to parents, the deputy principal of one of the schools apologized to the affected pupils. The letter clarified that the incident did not occur at the school and that the responsible students had also offered their apologies. This response aimed to address the concerns of the community and reaffirm the school’s commitment to fostering a respectful environment.

Halloween, celebrated worldwide on 31 October each year, originates from All Hallows’ Eve, the day before the Christian feast of All Saints’ Day.
