Tragic Incident in Mutuati: Poisonous Alcohol Claims Two Lives
In a heartbreaking incident, at least two people lost their lives after consuming poisonous alcohol in a village in Mutuati, Meru County. The tragedy has raised serious concerns about the dangers of illicit brews and the ongoing efforts to combat them.
Five other individuals were admitted to a local hospital in critical condition, according to police reports. These victims experienced symptoms such as severe headaches and loss of eyesight. The incident occurred on November 5, 2027, as confirmed by local officials.
The first victim, identified as James Mutembei, was found dead at a shopping center after consuming alcohol from a nearby home. Police arrived at the scene and confirmed that he had consumed suspected contaminated alcohol along with six others who were later taken to Mutuati Hospital. From there, they were referred to Nyambene Level Four Hospital, where one of the patients, Kamenchu M’mkinyeri, a 70-year-old man, succumbed to his injuries.
Police conducted an investigation at the location where the group had consumed the traditional brew known as Musengeri. They seized ten liters of the substance and sent samples to the Government Chemist for testing to determine the type of poison involved. The bodies of the two deceased men were moved to the mortuary for further examination and autopsies.
The remaining five victims are currently under medical care and are being monitored closely. This incident has come at a time when authorities are intensifying their efforts to tackle the issue of illicit alcohol and narcotics across the country.
Ongoing Operations Against Illicit Brews
National Police Service spokesman Michael Muchiri emphasized that the fight against drugs and illicit brews will continue. He stated, “Our teams on the ground are doing a good job, and they will sustain the campaign.” Officials have reported that thousands of liters of the brew have been destroyed in the past three months as part of these operations.
Tens of brewers have also been arrested during this period. Police have instructed their teams to maintain the operation, aiming to address the growing problem that has affected many families. According to police, some individuals are addicted to alcohol, which has led to devastating consequences in their lives.
In addition to targeting alcohol, the agencies are also focusing on narcotics. Thousands of rolls of bhang, valued at millions of shillings, have been seized in different locations. Several suspects have been arrested and charged in court for trafficking and possession of narcotics.
Targeting the Supply Chain
The teams are specifically targeting drug dealers who receive narcotics when they arrive from urban areas. Authorities claim that the campaign is yielding positive results, with a high rate of arrests and convictions. This follows reports indicating an increase in the consumption of drugs in major urban centers.
As a result, the focus has shifted to disrupting the supply chain. The ongoing efforts highlight the commitment of law enforcement to protect communities from the harmful effects of both illicit alcohol and narcotics.
