New Leadership for UNFPA
On November 7, the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced the appointment of Ms. Diene Keita as the new United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). This marks a significant milestone in the organization’s history, as Ms. Keita becomes its sixth Executive Director.
Ms. Keita, a national of Guinea, brings over three decades of experience in international development and public service to her new role. Her career has been defined by a commitment to advancing gender equality, empowering women and youth, and promoting sustainable human development. The UNFPA statement highlighted her deep understanding of the African context, which she has developed through various roles, including UN Resident Coordinator in several countries and as UNFPA Representative in Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Her extensive background is particularly valuable for the work of UNFPA in Ghana, where similar challenges and opportunities exist in the areas of sexual and reproductive health and rights. These issues are critical to achieving broader development goals and ensuring that all individuals can lead healthy, productive lives.
Before assuming her current role, Ms. Keita served as Acting Executive Director since July 16, 2025, and as UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNFPA Deputy Executive Director (Programme) since August 2020. She began her United Nations career in 1990 with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), where she worked on initiatives aimed at empowering women and youth and addressing gender-based violence.
During the swearing-in ceremony conducted by the UN Secretary-General, Ms. Keita expressed her deep honor in leading UNFPA during a pivotal moment. She emphasized the importance of the organization’s mission in a world marked by rapid demographic shifts and uncertainty. “By safeguarding sexual and reproductive health and rights, we not only save lives, but we lay the foundation for healthier, more resilient, and more prosperous societies,” she said.
The statement also noted that Dr. Wilfred Ochan, the UNFPA Ghana Country Representative, extended his congratulations to Ms. Keita on her appointment. He praised her for bringing renewed inspiration to the work being done in Ghana, particularly in the areas of ending preventable maternal deaths, meeting family planning needs, eliminating gender-based violence, building demographic resilience, and empowering young people.
Ms. Keita holds a doctorate in Law and advanced degrees in International Economics, Development Law, and International Relations from the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. She is fluent in English, French, and Italian, which enhances her ability to engage with diverse stakeholders across the globe.
