Super Eagles Coach Eric Chelle’s Ambitions for 2025 AFCON and 2026 World Cup Playoffs
Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has made it clear that his primary focus is on securing a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup through the upcoming playoffs. This success, he believes, will not only keep Nigeria’s World Cup hopes alive but also serve as a stepping stone toward achieving his goal of winning the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Chelle has emphasized that his ambition to win the AFCON is unwavering, but he is also aware that this goal could be jeopardized if Nigeria fails to advance through the World Cup qualifiers. The team currently faces a challenging path after missing out on an automatic qualification for the World Cup due to their poor performance in the initial matches.
Nigeria’s journey to the 2026 World Cup will involve a series of high-stakes playoff matches. The Super Eagles are set to face Gabon in one of the semi-finals next Thursday, with the potential of playing against the winner of the other semi-final between DR Congo and Cameroon. Chelle has spoken about the pressure that comes with these matches, stating that the team has been under constant stress since March.
“Since March, we’ve played every match under pressure. When we set foot in Morocco, that pressure will be familiar. We’ll be ready mentally and in our collective mindset. If we arrive on the back of play-off success, stopping us will be difficult,” Chelle said during an interview with CAFOnline.
He added that the immediate priority is to win the World Cup play-offs before shifting focus to the AFCON. “Before AFCON, there’s a crucial target: the World Cup play-offs. The goal is to win those matches. If we win the first (Gabon), we’ll aim for the second, then turn to AFCON.”
Chelle stressed that the team must maintain a focused mindset while working in parallel on both objectives. “We’re working in parallel, but our mindset must first be on those immediate tests. When you coach Nigeria, you have to win everything. But we proceed with humility, with a smile and a will to work. This team has great players. If we stay serious, motivated and united, nothing is impossible.”
If the Super Eagles succeed in the World Cup playoffs, Chelle will be able to concentrate fully on the 2025 AFCON, which is scheduled to take place from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. Nigeria has a rich history in the tournament, having won three titles in 1980, 1994, and 2013. However, they were defeated by Ivory Coast in the final of the last edition.
When asked about his goals for the upcoming AFCON, Chelle was clear about his desire to win. “Of course, we want to win it. Personally, I want to win AFCON. My last — and first — AFCON was a fantastic experience. I think Morocco will be a great tournament, too. The players feel the same.”
