President Zardari Honors Gilgit-Baltistan on Independence Day
On Friday, President Asif Ali Zardari delivered a heartfelt address during the 78th Independence Day celebrations of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), recognizing the region’s significant contributions to Pakistan’s growth and development. His speech highlighted the historical and ongoing efforts of GB in shaping the nation’s future.
In his remarks, President Zardari strongly condemned India’s actions in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), labeling them as ‘heinous’ and expressing concern over the dire conditions faced by the Kashmiri people. He warned that these actions are pushing the population toward a situation akin to genocide.
The president expressed deep affection for Gilgit-Baltistan, stating, “Gilgit-Baltistan is my home, and your courage will always be remembered.” He recalled the sacrifices made by the region’s people, mentioning that 1,700 brave sons were martyred in 1947 while fighting for Pakistan’s independence.
Historical Reforms and Future Prospects
Zardari also highlighted key reforms implemented in the past, such as the abolition of the Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR) under the leadership of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. He emphasized the establishment of a legislative assembly for GB, which marked a significant step toward greater autonomy and governance for the region.
The president stressed the importance of investing in education, infrastructure, and tourism to unlock GB’s full potential. He noted that these sectors could play a crucial role in improving the quality of life for the local population and fostering economic growth.
Economic Contributions and Regional Development
Referring to GB’s vast mineral wealth, Zardari underscored the region’s vital role in Pakistan’s economic development. He proposed the creation of a dedicated regional airline to enhance connectivity within the region and beyond. The president also described GB’s majestic mountains as a shared national treasure, emphasizing their cultural and environmental significance.
Strategic Partnerships and CPEC
During the ceremony, the Governor and Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan welcomed President Zardari. He was presented with a traditional cap and inspected the parade, honoring the region’s pivotal role in Pakistan’s independence.
Zardari also spoke about the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), reaffirming Pakistan’s strong partnership with China. He noted that the second phase of the project was progressing successfully, highlighting its importance for regional development and economic integration.
A Shared Vision for the Future
The president concluded by stating, “If Gilgit-Baltistan prospers, Pakistan prospers.” This sentiment reflects the broader vision of ensuring that the region’s development contributes to the overall growth of the country.
