Pedro Acosta’s Journey Toward a MotoGP Victory
Pedro Acosta, the highly-talented Spanish rider, continues to prove that his narrow defeats are shaping him into an even stronger competitor as he inches closer to securing his first MotoGP victory. The 2025 season has been a pivotal one for Acosta, marking the end of his second year in the premier class. His performance in the recent Portuguese Grand Prix showcased both his growing maturity and determination.
Acosta made a significant statement by qualifying on the front row for the first time in 2025 during the sprint race at Portimao. Despite this impressive achievement, he faced a tough challenge from Alex Marquez, who ultimately emerged victorious. Acosta tried every strategy available to stay ahead of the faster rider but fell just short, finishing in second place.
This result was not an isolated incident. Throughout the second half of the season, Acosta has consistently found himself in the runner-up position. He finished second in the sprint race in the Czech Republic before the summer break and has since demonstrated improved form and consistency. Notable second-place finishes include races in Hungary, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
The upcoming race on Sunday in Portugal presents another opportunity for Acosta to capitalize on his momentum. His recent improvements in tire management have been particularly noteworthy, and he believes this will be a key factor in his performance. Reflecting on the Portimao sprint, Acosta expressed confidence in the progress he has made.
“Nobody has done a lot of laps with the rear tire for [the long race],” he said. “It will be a question mark for everyone, but minimum today was that for the first time I was really, really close to this win. This means that we are working well. I’m not making a lot of mistakes. [This is only making me better]. We keep going.”

Strategic Challenges and Improvements
Although Acosta’s late braking and defensive lines were not enough to hold off Alex Marquez until the end of the sprint, he emphasized that these tactics did not negatively impact his overall result. He acknowledged that the KTM bike was not the fastest in the field, which added to the challenge.
“[Against] the two main manufacturers at the moment, that is Aprilia and Ducati, we just try to fight with the tools that we have. That is the braking points; trying to somehow block the others,” Acosta explained.
He also highlighted the importance of maintaining his aggressive racing style without compromising performance. “The good thing is that it looks like I was not losing performance on the brakes or this aggressiveness that I can have during the races. I think, like I said, these hard moments are making me a better guy.”

Looking Ahead
As the 2025 season progresses, Acosta remains focused on refining his skills and gaining more experience. His consistent performances and ability to learn from each race have positioned him as a strong contender for a first MotoGP win. With each race, he continues to demonstrate that setbacks are not roadblocks but stepping stones toward greater success.
