A 74-year-old man who is visually impaired, Pa Julius Nwafor, was among the first voters to arrive at the Umuezeadigo Street Polling Unit 002 in the Isuofia community, located within the Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Saturday. He reached the polling station as early as 7:30 am, accompanied by his elderly daughter.
Isuofia is the hometown of the current governor, Charles Soludo, and the Aguata LGA is one of the seven local government areas that make up Anambra South. Nwafor, a seasoned trader, shared with PUNCH Online his perspective on the importance of participating in the election.
“I see this election as something I must do because I am a patriotic Nigerian,” he said. “Even though I am visually impaired, I believe that as a citizen, I have a responsibility to vote and fulfill my conscience. That’s why I’m here today.”
Dr. Bunmi Omoseyindemi, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ekiti State, who is one of ten Election Logistics Technical Support Electoral Commissioners deployed to monitor the Anambra election, expressed satisfaction with the early turnout of voters at the polling unit.
“It is clear that the people are prepared, given the orderliness and the pace at which they are arriving,” he stated.
He also mentioned that once the voter accreditation process using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System is completed, voting will begin at 8:30 am.
PUNCH Online reports that the Anambra governorship election is taking place today, with 16 candidates vying to replace the current governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, who belongs to the All Progressives Grand Alliance.
