Cho Kuk Joins Democratic Party in Seoul Mayoral Bid

Cho Kuk’s Vision for Rebuilding Korea Party in Upcoming Local Elections

Former emergency committee chairman of the Rebuilding Korea Party, Cho Kuk, has outlined his strategy for the upcoming June local elections. In an interview, he emphasized the importance of forming alliances with the Democratic Party of Korea in metropolitan elections. According to his plan, the party will field candidates in all basic council member districts, ensuring a strong presence across various regions.

Cho Kuk highlighted that the goal is to reduce the number of People Power Party mayors in metropolitan areas to zero. He stated, “We will form alliances and negotiate with the Democratic Party in elections such as the Seoul mayoral race.” However, he noted that the approach for basic council member elections would be different. In these elections, the party aims to ensure that each multi-member district elects one basic council member, maintaining a balanced representation.

Strategic Alliances and Candidate Selection

Cho Kuk’s remarks suggest a strategic shift towards collaboration with the Democratic Party. This alliance is seen as crucial for challenging the dominance of the People Power Party in key metropolitan areas. By pooling resources and support, the Rebuilding Korea Party hopes to increase its influence and visibility during the upcoming elections.

Despite the focus on alliances, Cho Kuk remained cautious about speculation regarding the Seoul mayoral candidacy. He stated, “I will place myself, the last stone, after forming a nationwide candidate lineup by early next year.” This indicates that the party is prioritizing a comprehensive candidate selection process before making any final decisions.

Party Leadership and Future Goals

The Rebuilding Korea Party is set to hold a national convention on the 23rd to elect a new party leader and supreme council members. Former Chairman Cho resigned from his emergency committee chairman position on the 6th to run for the party leadership. His decision reflects a commitment to steering the party towards a more prominent role in the political landscape.

If elected as party leader, Cho Kuk expressed his intention to raise the party’s approval rating to around 10% before next year’s local elections. He emphasized that this level of support is essential for meaningful contestation of the elections. Achieving this target would require a combination of effective campaigning, strategic alliances, and a clear vision for the party’s future.
