Jamaat Denies Involvement in Election-Threatening Activities: Azad

Political Parties and the Role of Technology in Elections

In a recent seminar held at a city hotel, e-Islami’s Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad addressed the role of technology in shaping political manifestos to better reflect the aspirations of citizens. The event focused on how political parties can leverage technological advancements to enhance their engagement with the electorate.

Azad emphasized that his party is committed to maintaining a stable and peaceful election process. He stated, “We are proceeding positively. We are not, and never have been, involved in any activities that create unrest or threaten the election process.” This statement came amid ongoing discussions about the potential impact of various political strategies on the democratic framework of the nation.

Despite calls for dialogue from Jamaat, Azad noted that BNP is not willing to engage in talks with the group. “We don’t want politics to return to a fascist culture. However, if BNP calls for talks, we are ready to participate,” he added. This position highlights the complex dynamics between political factions and the challenges of fostering constructive dialogue.

The Importance of National Elections

The Jamaat leader expressed confidence in the party’s role as a representative of public opinion. “Jamaat is not a pressure group; it represents people’s opinions and aspirations on the streets. We can accept differences in opinion, but not division. We expect the national election to be held in February, and we are moving forward with that hope,” he said.

Azad also raised concerns about the proposed national referendum, which he described as an ‘acid test’ for the Election Commission. He warned that holding the referendum alongside the national election could lead to reduced voter turnout. “In national elections, voters’ attention remains focused on parties and candidates. If both the election and referendum are held together, it could delay voting and prevent many from casting their ballots,” he explained.

Implementation of the July Charter

Referring to the implementation process of the July Charter, Azad mentioned that although the charter was signed with some notes of dissent, differences emerged only after the implementation process was presented. This indicates the complexities involved in translating agreements into actionable policies.

The situation has led to a rift between BNP and Jamaat, who were once allies. They have taken opposing stances over the timing of the referendum, further complicating the political landscape. On November 11, Jamaat and its allies submitted a memo to the CA, warning of a potential “Different Dhaka” if their concerns are not addressed.

Concerns Over Election Commission Actions

Azad criticized the Election Commission for creating confusion regarding the timing of the referendum. “Holding the referendum on election day could cause complications. The main focus of the national election should remain on victory, and any suspension of polling could create uncertainty regarding the charter,” he said.

The interim government has urged political parties to hold discussions and reach an understanding. This call for dialogue comes at a critical time, as the nation prepares for significant political events that will shape its future.
