Kittharath Promises Crackdown on Scams Amid Backlash

Addressing External Criticism and Strengthening Cybercrime Combat Efforts

The Royal Thai Police (RTP) has reaffirmed its commitment to combating scamming operations, despite facing external accusations that label the force as a criminal gang. During a signing ceremony for a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation to prevent and combat cybercrime held at Government House, Pol Gen Kittharath Punpetch, the national police chief, addressed these allegations directly.

He emphasized that the RTP is fully dedicated to the government’s national policy aimed at suppressing online scams, which have been identified as a major threat due to their significant economic and social impacts. The MoU involves 15 different agencies working together to strengthen joint operations against technology-based fraud, marking a crucial step forward in the government’s anti-graft efforts.

A Collaborative Approach to Cybercrime

Pol Gen Kittharath highlighted that Thailand is not a base for scam networks, which primarily operate from neighboring countries. He noted that the country has been collaborating with Interpol and the United Nations to tackle scams, call center gangs, and human trafficking rings that are often interconnected.

He added that scammers from these neighboring countries frequently flee to Thailand to evade prosecution, and Thai authorities have been repatriating them. However, he stressed that successful arrests depend heavily on the level of cooperation from these states.

Commitment to Accountability

The police chief also reiterated that any police officer or individual found involved in wrongdoing will face strict legal action without exception or protection. This aligns with the prime minister’s directives, as such actions severely undermine the well-being of citizens.

“At present, the RTP is under heavy attack from external criticism targeting our image,” he said. “Let me emphasize — these accusations come from outsiders claiming the police are a large criminal organization in Thailand. Such a statement is an accusation against the entire police force. It is deeply hurtful.”

He continued, “I have remained calm and continued working despite constant criticism, but this accusation is extremely serious — one that no officer can accept.”
