Mamdani Names Pakistani American to Co-lead Transition Team

New Leadership for New York: A Fresh Approach to Governance

New York City is set for a significant transformation as Zohran Mamdani, the newly elected mayor, has taken a bold step in shaping his administration. Among the key appointments is Lina Maliha Khan, a prominent Pakistani-American legal scholar and former Chairperson of the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC). She has been named co-chair of Mamdani’s transition team, marking a pivotal moment in the city’s political landscape.

Mamdani, who is 34 years old, will become the first Muslim and South Asian individual to hold the position of mayor in New York City. His swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for January 1, 2026. Leading the city, which operates on a $116 billion budget, comes with immense responsibility and global attention. Alongside Mamdani, Lina Khan, who is 36, will co-lead the transition team alongside three other experienced officials from New York City Hall.

In a statement, Lina Khan expressed her enthusiasm about the new role. “New Yorkers sent a clear message this week that it’s time to build a city that working people can actually afford. I’m excited to help Zohran build a team that will usher in a new era for New York City and set a new model for Democratic governance,” she said.

Lina Khan played a crucial role during the Biden administration in advancing antitrust and consumer protection initiatives. As the head of the FTC, she intensified scrutiny of corporate mergers and led efforts to protect Americans from unfair business practices such as “junk fees” and mandatory arbitration clauses.

Her work has garnered praise from both progressive and conservative circles. While some criticized the Biden administration’s approach toward Big Tech companies, Lina Khan’s willingness to challenge major corporations like Amazon and Microsoft earned her support from a broad spectrum of political figures. Notably, even Republicans such as J.D. Vance, the current vice president, and Steve Bannon, a former White House chief strategist, have acknowledged her efforts.

One of her notable actions was the FTC’s investigation into Ticketmaster, the world’s largest ticketing company, which resulted in a bipartisan Justice Department lawsuit against the company in May of last year.

Born in London to Pakistani parents who moved to the United States in 2000, Lina Khan has made significant contributions to American politics. She is married to Dr. Shah Rukh Ali, a cardiologist at Columbia University.

Meanwhile, the United Nations has expressed its readiness to collaborate with the new mayor of New York. The city, home to the UN Headquarters, continues to play a vital role on the global stage.
