Professor Atta-ur-Rahman Honored as Academician of Asian Academy of Sciences

Honoring a Scientific Luminary

The AAS, based in Hong Kong, has officially announced the election of Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman, a renowned Pakistani scientist, as an honorary academician of the academy. This recognition was shared through an official communication from Prof. Dr. Elchin Khalilov, President of the AAS, who highlighted Prof. Rahman’s significant contributions to global science and education. The AAS emphasized that this induction marks a momentous occasion for the scientific community across Asia.

Prof. Rahman’s lifelong dedication to advancing scientific knowledge and his leadership in fostering regional and global cooperation in science and technology have been widely acknowledged. His induction into the AAS will be formally celebrated during the AAS General Assembly on November 22, 2025. Following this, a ceremonial session is planned in China in March 2026, where Prof. Rahman will receive the Golden Breast Insignia. This prestigious award, crafted from 999-carat gold, represents the highest distinction conferred by the AAS upon world-renowned scientists.

A Distinguished Career

The AAS President further praised Prof. Rahman’s global reputation, noting his fellowships in several prestigious institutions, including The Royal Society (London), the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Korean Academy of Science and Technology. His leadership has been pivotal at international scientific forums, where he has consistently advocated for collaborative efforts in scientific research and development.

Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman holds the title of Pakistan’s most decorated scientist. He has received four national civil awards: Tamgha-i-Imtiaz, Sitara-i-Imtiaz, Hilal-i-Imtiaz, and Nishan-i-Imtiaz. Internationally, his achievements have earned him numerous distinctions, such as the Fellowship of the Royal Society (London), the UNESCO Science Prize, the TWAS Prize for Institution Building, and the Austrian Government’s High Civil Award.

Strengthening International Ties

In recognition of his outstanding scientific collaboration with China, Prof. Rahman was honored with the People’s Republic of China’s highest scientific honor, the International Science and Technology Cooperation Award. Additionally, he was appointed Academician (Foreign Member) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. His contributions have led to the establishment of several research centers named after him, reflecting his impact on scientific communities across different regions.

These centers include the Academician Professor Atta-ur-Rahman One Belt and One Road TCM Research Center in Hunan, China, and the Atta-ur-Rahman Institute on Natural Product Discovery (AuRINS) in Malaysia. These institutions stand as testaments to his enduring legacy and influence in the field of science.
