South Korean Baseball Team Triumphs Over Czech Republic in Evaluation Match
South Korea’s national baseball team secured a 3-0 victory against the Czech Republic in an evaluation match. The game took place at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul on the 8th, marking the first game of the K-Baseball Series. The world No. 4 South Korean team defeated the world No. 15 Czech Republic, showcasing their strong pitching performance.
Strong Pitching Performance by South Korean Team
Starting pitcher Kwak Bin from Doosan delivered an impressive two innings without allowing a hit, with one walk, no runs, and four strikeouts. His performance was followed by a series of pitchers, including Kim Geon-woo from SSG, Choi Joon-yong from Lotte, Lee Ho-sung from Samsung, Lee Rou-noh from SSG, Kim Taek-yeon from Doosan, and Jo Byeong-hyeon from SSG. Together, they pitched scoreless innings and recorded a total of 17 strikeouts.
Despite the strong defense, the offense left some regrets as the team managed only five hits against the Czech players, many of whom have primary jobs outside of baseball. South Korea scored one run each in the first and second innings but remained hitless from the fourth to the seventh innings. They added one more run in the eighth inning.
Key Performers and Manager’s Comments
The game’s MVPs were Kim Taek-yeon, who pitched one inning in the eighth with three strikeouts, and the Czech Republic’s Lukas Hluch. Manager Ryu Ji-hyun, appointed in January, expressed his thoughts after the team’s first official game of the day. He mentioned that he wished for more active offensive power but acknowledged the team’s international competitiveness in their young bullpen pitchers.
Ryu also noted that the players’ game sense seemed to have declined, pointing out that players from teams that didn’t make the postseason haven’t played for over a month, so their bodies aren’t keeping up with their minds.
Player Perspectives and Challenges
Song Seongmun from Kiwoom, who recorded one hit, one walk, and one RBI in three at-bats that day, shared his experience. He mentioned that since the last regular-season game over a month ago, he hadn’t played in any actual games, leading to a decline in his game sense. He also highlighted the difficulty posed by the Czech pitchers, who had a lot of variation in their pitches, and stated that regaining his hitting feel is the most important thing.
Czech Republic Manager’s Remarks
Czech Republic team manager Pavel Hadim praised the game, expressing hope that Europe could have stadiums and cheering cultures like those in South Korea. He also commended the Korean pitchers and mentioned that their batters, who played their first actual game in about a month since the European Championship, are expected to improve more tomorrow.
The game attracted 16,100 spectators, with all tickets sold out. South Korea and the Czech Republic are in the same group at the World Baseball Classic (WBC) scheduled for March next year.
Upcoming Match and Starting Pitcher Announcement
The second evaluation match between South Korea and the Czech Republic will be held at the same venue at 2 p.m. on the 9th. Manager Ryu announced Oh Won-seok from KT as the starting pitcher for the upcoming game.
