Stella: Piastri Bounces Back After Brutal F1 Brazil Sprint Crash

McLaren Team Boss Expresses Confidence in Oscar Piastri After Sprint Crash

McLaren team boss Andrea Stella has expressed confidence that Oscar Piastri will quickly recover from his recent setback during the Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix sprint race. The incident, which cost Piastri eight championship points and allowed his teammate Lando Norris to extend his lead, was a significant blow for the Australian driver.

During lap six of the damp 24-lap contest on Saturday morning, Piastri lost control of his McLaren while navigating the wet kerbs on the inside of Turn 3. The Australian spun out and collided with the barriers, ending his race prematurely. This loss of third position meant Piastri missed out on six crucial championship points. In contrast, Norris secured victory in the sprint race, increasing his championship lead from one to nine points.

Behind Piastri, Nico Hulkenberg and Franco Colapinto also experienced similar spins, with Colapinto’s heavy crash resulting in a red flag for barrier repairs.

A Missed Opportunity for Piastri

Despite the setback, McLaren chief Andrea Stella remains optimistic about Piastri’s ability to bounce back. He highlighted that the Australian driver showed strong pace this weekend, following two inconsistent performances in Austin and Mexico City.

“It was a great result for Lando, and a missed opportunity with Oscar,” Stella said during an interview with F1 TV. “Conditions are tricky, you put the wheel on a kerb and that’s completely unforgiving, there’s no way to control the car. It happened to three drivers in the same lap, in the same point. So, it’s just unfortunate, but the most reassuring input thus far is that Oscar has been fast.”

Stella emphasized the importance of capitalizing on Piastri’s speed in qualifying and the main race. “We now look forward, we want to capitalise this speed in qualifying and then in the race tomorrow.”

Piastri’s Resilience and Focus

Stella added: “He will reset very quickly. I’m sure as soon as he’s back with the engineers, he’s thinking about what we can do for qualifying, what did we learn from the fuel-ups in the sprint. Racers, they reset, they go again. And you don’t have to carry any disappointment, because otherwise you’re just depowering yourself. We know that Oscar is very capable, very quick, so we repair the car and we go again.”

Piastri, who commented sparsely on the incident to Sky, acknowledged the challenge ahead. “Just trying to put this behind, I guess. We’ll see what weather we have for this afternoon. Obviously, there’s a lot more points on offer tomorrow, so the better job I can do this afternoon of trying to give myself a good starting spot, the better we’ll be.”

Looking Ahead

As the focus shifts to the main race, both drivers will aim to recover from the setbacks of the sprint event. For Piastri, the key will be to secure a strong starting position and capitalize on the opportunities that lie ahead. With the support of his team and a clear focus on improvement, the Australian driver is expected to push forward and make a strong impact in the remainder of the season.
