The Importance of Reclaiming Prasat Ta Kwai
The military forces should continue their efforts to reclaim the ancient temple of Prasat Ta Kwai in Surin province, according to former Second Army Region commander Lt Gen Boonsin Padklang. This call for action is rooted in the need to honor the fallen soldiers and protect national sovereignty. Lt Gen Boonsin, who now serves as an adviser to the commander-in-chief of the Royal Thai Army, emphasized that there are multiple ways to pursue this mission.
The remarks were made during a forum organized by the War Veterans Organisation of Thailand. The event, held at the Army Club in Bangkok, aimed to commemorate the courage and sacrifice of Thai soldiers who served in World War I. It included an exhibition, lectures by military historians, and a tribute ceremony for soldiers who died in the recent Thai-Cambodian border conflict. Additionally, it sought to inspire young cadets by highlighting Thailand’s military heritage and the bravery of past generations.
A Significant Military Engagement
Lt Gen Boonsin expressed surprise at how the clashes between Thai and Cambodian forces along the border escalated into what he described as Thailand’s most significant modern military engagement. He expressed pride in his service and paid tribute to the 16 Thai soldiers who lost their lives during the recent conflict.
Although retired since September 30, Lt Gen Boonsin remains committed to fostering patriotism and continues to engage with citizens who share his dedication to the nation, religion, and monarchy. He also urged the younger generation to uphold these enduring values.
Border Incidents and International Scrutiny
Recounting past border incidents, Lt Gen Boonsin accused Cambodian troops of repeatedly crossing into Thai territory. He stated that these actions disrespected Thai forces and compelled Thailand to respond with stronger measures. However, he admitted that his options at the time were limited due to international scrutiny.
Meanwhile, Army spokesman Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree highlighted ongoing cooperation between Thailand and Cambodia under a joint action plan to remove heavy weapons and landmines along the border. He mentioned that Thai patrols during November 2-3 discovered and safely disposed of two PMN-2 mines near Chong An Ma Pass in Ubon Ratchathani province.
Maintaining Calm and Communication
Overall, the situation remained calm, with no signs of interference or abnormal activity from the Cambodian side. Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree emphasized that Thai authorities are prioritizing careful communication and close coordination with Cambodia to support commitments made during the recent ASEAN Summit.
