Uhuru Challenges Kenyatta Trust Graduates to Lead with Honesty

A Call to Leadership: Inspiring the Next Generation

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta recently addressed a gathering of young graduates, urging them to embrace leadership roles rooted in integrity, humility, and a commitment to justice. His message was clear: Kenya’s future depends on values-driven leaders who are willing to rise above challenges and make a positive impact.

The speech took place at the 2024/2025 Kenyatta Trust Graduation Dinner, an event held in Nairobi that brought together students, mentors, and community leaders. During the ceremony, Uhuru emphasized the importance of resisting the pressures of corruption, division, and selfish ambition. He encouraged the graduates to lead with courage and to prioritize the well-being of others over personal gain.

“Go out into the world with humility and lead. Lead with integrity, a commitment to justice, and always with peace in your hearts,” he said. His words resonated deeply with the audience, many of whom had overcome significant obstacles to reach this milestone.

The Power of Character Over Titles

Uhuru highlighted that true leadership is not defined by titles or positions but by character, courage, and a willingness to serve. He spoke under the theme “From Learners to Leaders,” emphasizing that the path to leadership requires bravery and resilience. “Always do right even when the right thing isn’t popular,” he advised, adding that standing alone is often a necessary step before others can follow.

He also reminded the graduates that their success is part of a larger responsibility to uplift others. “Your success is not solely personal, but part of a collective responsibility to uplift others,” he said. This sentiment was echoed by the Kenyatta Trust, which has long supported students from disadvantaged backgrounds through scholarships, mentorship, and personal development programs.

Building Bridges for a Unified Nation

The former President stressed the importance of unity and mutual respect in shaping Kenya’s future. He urged the graduates to build bridges rather than deepen divisions. “Kenya will only thrive when its people choose to build bridges rather than deepen divisions,” he said.

The Kenyatta Trust, established in 2010, has played a vital role in fostering national identity and leadership. Its mission is to develop leaders who are not only academically strong but also emotionally and socially grounded. One of the trust’s founding principles was to encourage a sense of national identity beyond tribal or regional boundaries.

“We wanted to nurture individuals who do not identify with a tribe or a region, but as part of a great nation,” Uhuru explained. “A people with shared destiny, because the building of a great nation begins with the ability to see one another as equals in purpose and hope.”

Celebrating Achievements and Looking Ahead

The graduation dinner celebrated the achievements of 41 scholars who have completed their undergraduate and tertiary education across various institutions in Kenya and abroad. Many of these students came from backgrounds where educational opportunities were limited, and their journeys were shaped by resilience and determination.

Director of the Kenyatta Trust, Kirigo Ndegwa, praised the graduates, noting that over 68% of Kenyatta Trust alumni are now gainfully employed. “It’s not by chance. Kenyatta Trust scholars are built differently; they are resilient, responsible, and truly remarkable,” she said.

The evening was filled with celebration, gratitude, and reflection, marking another important step in the trust’s mission to nurture leaders who serve with integrity. As the graduates prepare to enter the next phase of their lives, they carry with them the values and lessons instilled by the Kenyatta Trust and the guidance of a leader who believes in their potential.
