VinSpeed has unveiled a proposal to construct a high-speed rail line valued at VND86.65 trillion (US$3.3 billion), connecting the central district of Ben Thanh in Ho Chi Minh City with the coastal mangrove area of Can Gio. The initiative aims to commence commercial operations by 2028, marking a significant step in Vietnam’s transportation infrastructure development.
The proposed rail line will span 53 kilometers and is designed to operate at a speed of 350 kilometers per hour. Initially, the project includes two stations, with plans to add two more if demand increases. This ambitious plan is currently under review by the government, with VinSpeed aiming to complete the feasibility study by the end of this year.
If the project receives approval, construction will begin immediately. Trial runs are expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2027, with full commercial service launching in early 2028. The company envisions operating trains composed of eight carriages, each capable of accommodating up to 600 passengers per trip.

The rail service is anticipated to run daily from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., with trains departing every 20 minutes in both directions. This frequency would result in approximately 43,680 passengers per day or 15.9 million passengers annually.
VinSpeed, established by Vietnam’s wealthiest individual, Pham Nhat Vuong, is engaged in railroad construction and rolling stock manufacturing. Vuong holds a 51% stake in the company, while the remaining shares are primarily held by his controlled Vietnam Investment Group (35%) and his flagship enterprise, Vingroup (10%).
In addition to the Can Gio project, VinSpeed recently proposed the development of a high-speed rail line between Hanoi and Ha Long Bay, estimated to cost VND138.93 trillion (US$5.3 billion) and expected to begin operations by 2028. Earlier, the company had sought to become the developer for a high-speed rail line stretching 1,541 kilometers between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
This series of proposals underscores VinSpeed’s growing ambition in the transportation sector, positioning itself as a key player in Vietnam’s evolving infrastructure landscape. With its focus on speed, efficiency, and passenger capacity, the company aims to revolutionize intercity travel in the country.
