Wangai and Wafula Ready for Sunshine Development Tour Limuru Leg

Kenyan Golfers Ready for Betika Masters at Limuru Country Club

Kenyan golfers are preparing to compete in the Betika Masters, a prestigious three-day tournament hosted at the par-72 Limuru Country Club. The event is scheduled to run from Sunday to Tuesday, drawing attention from both local and international golf enthusiasts.

Among the participants are notable players such as John Wangai and Naomi Wafula, who have arrived at the event with a strong sense of confidence and determination. Wangai, who serves as the chairman of the Professional Golfers of Kenya, recently finished as a runner-up at the VetLab tournament. His performance has set high expectations for his participation in the Betika Masters.

The competition is expected to feature a strong field of 88 professional and elite amateur golfers from across Africa. This diverse group promises to make the tournament highly competitive, with top-tier golf on display throughout the event.

Preparing for Limuru’s Challenges

Wangai expressed his readiness for the challenges posed by Limuru’s layout. “I’m feeling in good control of my game now, and I’m looking forward to playing even better at Limuru,” he said. He noted that the course resembles his home club, Sigona, in terms of layout and weather conditions. This similarity has allowed him to focus on accuracy off the tee, which he believes is crucial for success at Limuru.

Driving and putting have been key components of his preparation. “Driving and putting are keeping me going; they’re the strongest part of my game at the moment,” he added. Wangai also highlighted the importance of the Sunshine Development Tour, which provides a platform for players to improve and gain opportunities to progress to higher-level tours like the DP World Tour.

Mental Strength and Focus

Wangai emphasized the mental aspect of competition. “The main lesson (at VetLab) was staying in the moment, even under pressure and being patient throughout the round,” he said. This mindset will be crucial as he faces the challenges of the Betika Masters.

Naomi Wafula, the only woman to make the cut at VetLab and one of the region’s most promising female golfers, is also determined to build on her momentum. “I’m feeling really confident about my game right now and that’s definitely a big plus heading to Limuru. I want to carry the same energy, focus and determination that I had at VetLab,” she said.

Adapting to Limuru’s Conditions

Limuru’s cold and wet conditions require careful preparation. “Limuru can be quite cold and wet, which is very different from the weather at the coast. The last time I played there, I actually got sick, so this time I’m much better prepared. Golf takes us to different climates and I’m learning how to adapt quickly, whether it’s hot, windy or freezing,” she explained.

Wafula also praised the mixed-gender format of the Sunshine Development Tour. “Competing in a mixed field with the men means a lot to me. It’s a great challenge and pushes me to grind harder, stay sharp, and improve every day. It’s helping me become a stronger, more complete player,” she added.

Long-Term Goals and Aspirations

“My goal is to give it my all, take it one shot at a time, and stay patient. I want to keep building on the momentum I have,” she said. Wafula sees the Tour as a critical step toward achieving her long-term goals. “I aspire to play in bigger international events and the SDT–EAS has been an amazing pathway. The competition level is high, and it’s preparing me for the challenges ahead. I’m very grateful for the opportunities this Tour is giving me, taking steps closer to my dreams,” she concluded.

Prize Money and Opportunities

The Betika Masters at Limuru offers Sh2 million in prize money, OWGR and WAGR points, and Safari Tour ranking points that count towards qualification for the 2026 Magical Kenya Open. This event not only provides financial incentives but also serves as a significant opportunity for players to gain exposure and recognition on a larger stage.
