Adamawa CAN Head Denies Death Claims

Denial of False Reports About Christian Association Leader’s Death

The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Adamawa State, Joe Manzo, has firmly denied recent social media reports that claimed he was killed by terrorists. In a clear statement, Manzo emphasized that there is no threat to his life and that the reports were fabricated with the intention of creating unrest in the state.

Since Friday, some social media users have been spreading a fake story that the Adamawa CAN chairman was beheaded by terrorists. This false news gained momentum on Saturday, causing concern among the people of the northern part of the country. The situation became more sensitive following US President Donald Trump’s earlier threat to deploy military forces to Nigeria to stop what he described as a Christian genocide in the region.

Speaking with Sunday PUNCH, Manzo expressed his confusion about the origin of the report. He said, “I don’t know the author of that news; if I knew him, I would have asked what his intention is.” He added that he was not disturbed by what he called “wicked fake news,” and stressed that his life is in the hands of God and not man.

Manzo urged the people of the state to ignore the fabricated report and continue supporting Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s administration. He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and unity in the face of such misinformation.

Police Dismisses Social Media Claims

In addition to Manzo’s denial, the Adamawa State Police Command also addressed the false claims. In a statement released by its spokesperson, Suleiman Nguroje, the police command categorically refuted the malicious report. They stated that there is no such incident recorded anywhere in Adamawa State, and that the report is purely the work of mischief-makers aiming to create panic, tension, and religious disaffection among the residents.

Nguroje highlighted that the police are conducting investigations to identify and prosecute those responsible for the false publication. He assured the public that the authorities are taking the matter seriously and will take appropriate legal action against those involved.

Impact of Fake News on Public Perception

The spread of this false information raises serious concerns about the role of social media in shaping public perception. In an age where information spreads rapidly, it is crucial for individuals and institutions to verify the authenticity of news before sharing it. The fabricated report not only caused unnecessary fear but also undermined the efforts of local leaders and security agencies to maintain stability in the region.

The incident also underscores the need for greater awareness and education on digital literacy. As social media platforms continue to play a significant role in public discourse, users must be cautious about the content they consume and share. Misinformation can have real-world consequences, especially in regions already facing challenges related to security and religious tensions.

Call for Responsible Reporting

Both Manzo and the police command have called for responsible reporting and the promotion of accurate information. They emphasize the importance of relying on verified sources and official statements rather than unconfirmed rumors. This approach not only helps prevent the spread of false narratives but also supports the overall well-being of the community.

As the investigation into the source of the fake report continues, it is hoped that the authorities will be able to bring those responsible to justice. In the meantime, the public is encouraged to remain vigilant and seek out reliable information from trusted channels.
