Tragedy Strikes LAUTECH Iseyin Campus

The Ladoke Akintola University (LAUTECH), Iseyin campus, is currently in a state of deep mourning following the tragic death of a 200-level student from the Department of Agricultural Economics. The victim, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was fatally injured in a hit-and-run incident that occurred in Iseyin. The shocking event has left the university community reeling and has led to widespread protests among students.

Protests Erupt Across Campus

In response to the incident, students took to the streets in protest, demanding justice for their fellow student. The demonstrations quickly escalated, leading to the closure of the institution for two weeks. The university management made the decision to suspend academic activities at the Iseyin campus as a measure to provide time for the community to grieve and reflect.

Official Statement from the Registrar

The Registrar of LAUTECH, Mrs. Olayinka Balogun, confirmed the suspension in an official statement. She expressed the university’s condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, stating that the incident has cast a shadow over the entire university community.

“Given the emotional impact of this tragic loss on our students and staff, we have decided to suspend all academic activities at the Iseyin Campus for two weeks,” she said. “This break will allow everyone to process their grief and support one another during this difficult time.”

She further added that students in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Renewable Natural Resources will be on a two-week break. All students are expected to return to their classrooms on Monday, 24th November 2025, when academic activities resume. Essential service officers will be notified accordingly.

Call for Unity and Safety

Mrs. Balogun urged all students to remain safe and to support one another during this challenging period. She also encouraged them to honour the memory of their departed colleague by coming together as a community.

A Time for Reflection

The incident has sparked a broader conversation about safety and security on campus. Students and faculty alike are calling for increased measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. The university is now focusing on providing emotional support to those affected while working to ensure the safety of its students and staff.

Impact on the Community

The tragedy has not only affected the immediate campus community but has also resonated beyond the university. Local residents and other institutions have expressed their solidarity with LAUTECH, offering support and condolences to the grieving family.

As the university moves forward, it is clear that the loss of a student has brought both sorrow and unity to the LAUTECH community. The two-week break is seen as an opportunity for healing, reflection, and renewed commitment to creating a safer environment for all.

Moving Forward

The suspension of academic activities is a necessary step to allow the community to process the loss and rebuild. It is hoped that this time will lead to meaningful discussions about safety, mental health, and the importance of supporting one another in times of crisis. The university is committed to ensuring that the lessons learned from this tragedy will help prevent future incidents and foster a stronger, more compassionate campus environment.
