The Rise of Jake Weatherald and the Barmy Army’s Challenge
English fan groups have long been a significant presence in cricket, particularly during high-stakes matches like the Ashes. Now, as the First Ashes Test against England approaches, Australian cricketer Jake Weatherald is stepping into the spotlight, set to partner with Usman Khawaja at the top of the batting order. Weatherald, 31, is expected to make his Test debut when Australia takes on England at Perth’s Optus Stadium on November 21.
Weatherald has been making waves this summer, starting the Sheffield Shield season strongly with three fifties in six innings. He also finished the previous season as the competition’s leading run-scorer. Despite the anticipated challenges of facing the notorious Barmy Army, Weatherald is eager to embrace the experience.
“Being sledged by the Barmy Army would be one of the greatest moments of my life,” he said. “It would be funny. I’ll just take it on for what it is, and every moment is going to be a cool experience.”

Weatherald has been vying for a Test spot for the past 18 months and is now set to become Usman Khawaja’s fifth opening partner since David Warner retired in January. His recent success came after beating Sam Konstas, who made his Test debut on Boxing Day last year, to secure a place in the squad for the first Ashes Test.
The Barmy Army, known for its passionate support, has already responded to Weatherald’s comments. In a post on X, they said, “I’m sure we can make that happen, Jake.” The group has also revealed which player they will target most as the series begins.
Steve Smith Faces the Heat
Stand-in captain Steve Smith will once again be under the spotlight from the Barmy Army, as fans are certain to reference his role in the 2018 Sandpapergate scandal. James Whitehouse, co-founder of the Barmy Army Perth Supporters, said, “We thoroughly expect to get hammered by the Aussie fans, but we’ll give it back.” He added, “The fact that Steve Smith is captain is going to be a nice one for us, because let’s face it, he’s got it coming again.”
Smith, 36, has had a remarkable career against England. He almost won the 2019 Ashes series singlehandedly, averaging over 110 across the four Tests he played. He has scored 12 Test hundreds versus England and led Australia to a dominant 4-0 series win in 2017-18.

England has not won the Ashes since 2015 and hasn’t won an Ashes series in Australia since 2010-11. Smith himself claims this series will be his toughest yet. “England had a really good side at that point,” he said. “I was young, batting down the order, and trying to find my way. I probably wasn’t ready at that stage either, and it was tricky at that stage.”
What Lies Ahead?
The First Ashes Test will get underway at Optus Stadium in Perth on November 21. As the teams prepare for the showdown, fans and analysts alike are watching closely to see if Weatherald can rise to the occasion and help Australia secure a strong start.
Will Jake Weatherald be able to handle the pressure of facing the Barmy Army? Can he match the form that has earned him a Test debut? And how will Steve Smith respond to the scrutiny from England’s passionate supporters?
As the Ashes approach, all eyes will be on the players and the fans, ready to witness another chapter in one of cricket’s most storied rivalries.
