Hoshoryu Makes Strong Comeback in Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament
FUKUOKA – Yokozuna Hoshoryu made a strong return to form at the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament on Monday, securing an impressive victory over komusubi Takanosho after suffering an opening-day loss. The Mongolian-born grand champion demonstrated his dominance by overpowering his opponent with a powerful initial charge, pushing him back off the raised ring.
Hoshoryu had faced a challenging start, losing to rising No. 1 maegashira Hakuoho earlier in the tournament. However, he was determined to avoid an 0-2 record by taking on Takanosho, against whom he had won eight of their previous 11 encounters in the elite makuuchi division. His strategy was straightforward and effective, as he used a stiff arm to push Takanosho back, ensuring a decisive win.
Onosato and Aonishiki Continue Their Winning Streaks
Fellow grand champion Onosato also emerged victorious, avoiding becoming the second straight yokozuna victim for Hakuoho (1-1), who had previously defeated him in their last two head-to-head matches. Onosato managed to overcome Hakuoho’s aggressive style, wrapping up the hard-charging opponent and crushing him out.
On the other hand, newly promoted Ukrainian sekiwake Aonishiki continued his winning streak by defeating former sekiwake Wakamotoharu (0-2). Competing as a No. 2 maegashira, Aonishiki showcased his strength and technique to secure a dominant victory.
Kotozakura Faces Setback in Day 2
In contrast, lone ozeki Kotozakura suffered his first defeat of the 15-day tournament. The Mongolian-born wrestler, who had skipped last month’s London tour due to a knee injury, was overpowered from the start by former ozeki Kirishima (1-1), who was competing as a No. 2 maegashira. Kirishima delivered a stronger charge and maintained forward momentum, forcing Kotozakura over the straw bales.
Oho Secures a Victory
Other notable performances included Oho, the other current sekiwake, who advanced to 2-0 with a convincing win by armlock throw against No. 1 maegashira Wakatakakage. Wakatakakage is the younger brother of Wakamotoharu, adding an extra layer of significance to the match.
