McLaren Joins De Palo as Academy Reforms Begin

McLaren Expands Driver Development Programme with New Talent

McLaren has announced the signing of 18-year-old Matteo De Palo to its driver development programme, marking a significant step in the team’s ongoing efforts to nurture future racing stars. De Palo, who finished as the runner-up in the 2025 Formula Regional European Championship, will now be part of the academy, which is undergoing a major restructuring.

De Palo’s performance in the 2023 season was particularly notable, as he secured his best result since transitioning to single-seaters. He finished second behind FRECA champion Freddie Slater, setting the stage for his upcoming move to Formula 3 with Trident next year. His inclusion in the McLaren programme is a testament to his potential and progress over the past few seasons.

“Joining the McLaren Driver Development Programme is a great honour,” said De Palo, who also gained experience in the Italian and British F4 championships. “The team have a fantastic track record for developing talent, so I am excited to grow across all elements of being a racing driver. Thank you to Zak [Brown], Alessandro [Alunni Bravi] and the entire McLaren team. I am excited to get out on track in papaya.”

Changes in the Academy Structure

De Palo’s addition comes alongside the departure of three F3 drivers—Ugo Ugochukwu, Martinius Stenshorne, and Brando Badoer—from the McLaren fold at the end of the year. Alunni Bravi, who oversees the academy, expressed confidence in De Palo’s abilities.

“The McLaren Driver Development Programme is pleased to welcome Matteo. He is an exciting young talent who has made great progress over the past seasons, showing adaptability, consistency and growth. We look forward to supporting his development across driving, as well as the wider aspects of being a professional driver, within our programme pathway. We also thank Ugo, Martinius and Brando for their contribution to McLaren and wish them the best for the future.”

Strategic Goals of the Programme

McLaren has outlined its long-term vision for the driver development programme, aiming to prepare drivers for opportunities in Formula 1, IndyCar, and the World Endurance Championship, which the team will enter in 2027. The programme has a rich history of producing top-tier drivers, including seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, current F1 points leader Lando Norris, former F1 driver Kevin Magnussen, and Formula E champion Stoffel Vandoorne.

Other Developments in McLaren’s Motorsport Division

In addition to the driver development programme, McLaren has also announced changes in its GT division. Sanna, the former head of Lamborghini motorsport, will lead the team’s GT programmes, signaling a new chapter in McLaren’s involvement in endurance racing.

Looking Ahead

With De Palo joining the ranks of promising talents and the academy undergoing strategic changes, McLaren continues to solidify its position as a key player in the development of future racing stars. The team’s commitment to nurturing talent across various racing disciplines underscores its ambition to maintain a strong presence in the motorsport world.
