Nigeria Launches First African Chovken Championship in Abuja

The African Regional Championship: A New Era for Equestrian Sports in Nigeria

The African Region of the International Chovken Federation (ICF) is set to host its first-ever African regional championship, a significant event that promises to bring together teams from across the continent. This milestone marks a major step forward for equestrian sports in Nigeria and highlights the country’s growing reputation on the international stage.

Nura Sani Kangiwa, Chairman of the African Region of the ICF, confirmed the details of the event and emphasized its importance. He stated that the championship will serve as a platform to showcase Nigeria’s capabilities in equestrian sports while also promoting the sport across Africa. Countries such as Egypt, Morocco, South Africa, and Ghana are expected to be among the leading participants, competing for top honors during the four-day festival.

Kangiwa highlighted that Nigeria’s selection as the host country follows its impressive performance at the maiden International Chovken Championship held in Baku, Azerbaijan last year. There, Nigeria outperformed teams from around the world, earning recognition for its talent and dedication in the sport.

“Hosting this championship will not only boost Nigeria’s image internationally but also stimulate interest and investment in equestrian sports across the country,” Kangiwa said. “Countries like Kenya, and several others have already expressed readiness to participate.”

He further added that efforts are underway to ensure a seamless experience for all stakeholders involved. “We are working with private and public stakeholders to ensure a seamless hosting experience. This is a legacy project that could redefine equestrian sports in Nigeria and indeed Africa.”

The Sport of Chovken: A Unique Blend of Tradition and Strategy

Chovken is an equestrian team sport with deep historical roots and striking similarities to Polo. The game is played by two teams of four horse riders who use curved wooden mallets to drive a small leather ball into the opponent’s goal. It is a fast-paced and strategic sport that has a long-standing legacy, predating and even inspiring modern Polo.

This unique combination of speed, skill, and teamwork makes Chovken an exciting addition to the sporting landscape in Nigeria. The upcoming championship will bring together the finest riders and teams from across the continent and beyond, offering a glimpse into the pinnacle of equestrian excellence.

Government Support and Future Prospects

Alhaji Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), pledged the commission’s support for the event. He noted that hosting such a championship aligns with the federal government’s broader goals of expanding Nigeria’s sporting portfolio beyond mainstream athletics.

This initiative is seen as a way to promote less traditional sports and encourage more investment in infrastructure and training programs for equestrian athletes. By hosting the African regional championship, Nigeria is positioning itself as a key player in the development of equestrian sports in Africa.

Looking Ahead

With the support of both local and international stakeholders, the African regional championship is expected to be a resounding success. It represents not just a celebration of sport but also an opportunity to foster collaboration, cultural exchange, and economic growth.

As preparations continue, the event is anticipated to draw attention from sports enthusiasts, investors, and media outlets worldwide. The championship is more than just a competition; it is a testament to Nigeria’s potential and a stepping stone toward a brighter future for equestrian sports in the region.
