Plateau State Government’s Commitment to Science and Innovation
The Plateau State Government has made it clear that it is dedicated to leveraging science, technology, and innovation to address pressing security challenges and stimulate socioeconomic growth within the state. This commitment was highlighted during a press conference held in Jos, the state capital, on Monday as part of the activities commemorating the 2025 World Science Day for Peace and Development.
Dr. Cletus Bako, the state Commissioner for Science and Technology, spoke at the event, emphasizing the critical role that science plays in fostering peace, promoting sustainable development, and improving the quality of life for residents. He noted that the event aligns with several key Sustainable Development Goals and reflects the vision of Governor Caleb Mutfwang to ensure lasting peace and development in the region.
Bako stated, “Beyond providing technical solutions, science creates unique opportunities for international cooperation. This event offers a moment to reflect on the kind of science and the kind of relationship between science and society that will be needed to meet the demands of the coming decades.”
Advancing Science and Innovation in Plateau State
The commissioner also discussed the state’s ongoing efforts to promote science, technology, and innovation. One of the key initiatives is the upcoming Plateau State Festival of Innovation, Science, and Technology, which will serve as a platform to showcase local innovations and inspire further advancements.
He called on all stakeholders to collaborate and ensure that scientific innovations lead to a more prosperous and sustainable future. This future, he emphasized, should be built on trust and driven by transformation.
“Science is central to addressing global issues such as climate change, health crises, and technological equity. It is essential to peace-building, offering practical, sustainable solutions to contemporary global challenges. By responding to climate crises, epidemics, and resource shortages, science helps mitigate the root causes of many conflicts,” Bako said.
This year’s theme for the World Science Day, “Trust, Transformation, and Tomorrow: The Science We Need for 2050,” invites both national and international communities to reflect on the evolving role of science in shaping a peaceful, equitable, safer, smarter, and more sustainable future.
Events and Activities Highlighting Science and Technology
The 2025 World Science Day for Peace and Development celebration in Plateau State featured a variety of engaging activities. These included lectures, panel discussions, exhibitions, quizzes, and counseling sessions focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
The event aimed to highlight the importance of science in tackling global challenges such as climate change, health crises, and technological equity. It also served as a reminder of the role that science plays in promoting peace and sustainable development.
Through these activities, the government and its partners sought to foster a deeper understanding of how science can contribute to societal progress. By encouraging collaboration and innovation, the event underscored the potential of science to drive positive change and create a better future for all.
