A New Challenge for Rivers United in the CAF Champions League
Rivers United, a prominent Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) side, has officially entered the 2025/26 CAF Champions League group stage. The club’s head coach, Finidi George, has expressed confidence in his team’s ability to compete against some of the continent’s top clubs.
The draw for Group B of the competition was announced on Monday, placing Rivers United alongside defending champions Pyramids FC, RS Berkane, and Power Dynamos. This challenging group presents a tough test for the Nigerian team, but George believes that with proper preparation, his squad can rise to the occasion.
“It’s a good draw, a difficult group. But if you want to compete in that tournament, you have to play your best at some stage. We’ll prepare when the time comes,” George said. He emphasized that the team is currently focused on their domestic league commitments before shifting attention to the continental competition.
“For now, we’ll just concentrate on our league games. When it’s getting closer to that, we’ll try to prepare the boys mentally for what’s coming ahead.”
George also highlighted the significance of qualifying for the group stage, which he sees as a major motivational boost for the players. “It’s extra motivation for the players. Having this platform on this big stage is going to bring a lot of expectations and a lot of confidence for the players. They’re all looking forward to having this platform to showcase what they have. So, the time has come.”
He added, “We just hope mentally they are prepared for it. I don’t think physically we’ll struggle, but I think mentally this is a big stage. There’s no pressure for us. We’ll just let the boys do the basic things defensively. I think if we defend properly in a game like that, in 90 minutes, we’re going to have our moment.”
Qualification Journey and Domestic Form
Rivers United secured their place in the group stage after a hard-fought campaign in the qualifying rounds. In the second qualifying round, they defeated Mozambique’s Black Bulls 3-2 on aggregate, following an earlier win over JSK of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the preliminaries.
This achievement marks a historic milestone for the club, as they become the first Nigerian team to reach the CAF Champions League group stage since Lobi Stars in the 2018/19 season.
Under George’s leadership, Rivers United has started the 2025/26 NPFL season on a high note. The team has shown strong form and determination, setting the stage for a potentially successful campaign both domestically and internationally.
Upcoming Fixtures and Expectations
Looking ahead, Rivers United will face Bendel Insurance in their next NPFL match on Thursday. This fixture will serve as a crucial test for the team as they continue to build momentum.
With the CAF Champions League looming, the focus remains on preparation, both mentally and physically. George has made it clear that the team is ready to embrace the challenge and make the most of their opportunity on the continental stage.
As the group stage approaches, all eyes will be on Rivers United to see if they can make a statement in one of Africa’s most prestigious football competitions.
