Why Antonelli’s Best F1 Performances Happen on Unfamiliar Tracks

Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s Unexpected Success in Unfamiliar Circuits

Toto Wolff, the team principal of Mercedes, has shared insights into why Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s standout performances during his rookie Formula 1 season have occurred at circuits he hadn’t previously raced on. The 19-year-old Italian driver secured a second-place finish at the Brazilian Grand Prix, marking his second podium of the 2025 season. This achievement came after a third-place finish in Canada and a pole position in the Miami sprint race.

These successes have all taken place on tracks that Antonelli had not previously encountered, which contrasts with the usual expectation that a rookie would perform better on circuits they have experience with from their junior formula days. However, this hasn’t been the case for Antonelli, who has only managed to score points twice in the nine mid-season European rounds. His performance has been inconsistent, with several crashes and mistakes detracting from his results. He even struggled with the pressure at his home race in Imola, where he retired.

Wolff believes that the lack of fan adulation at non-European tracks may have helped Antonelli. At the Brazilian Grand Prix, Antonelli held off a late challenge from Max Verstappen to secure second place. This result was particularly impressive given the challenging conditions of the Interlagos circuit.

“All weekend he was strong,” said Wolff, highlighting Antonelli’s performance in both the main race and the Sao Paulo sprint. “Maybe it was coming to a track that he didn’t know – it’s a bit easier. Expectations are maybe lower. Maybe pressure is not as high as some of the Europeans, and then the execution was faultless at the end: being able to fend off Max on a newer and softer tyre, well that was really strong and testament to what’s to come.”

Antonelli’s first exposure to top-tier competition in Formula 1 has been a steep learning curve. Prior to joining F1, he achieved remarkable success in the junior formulas, winning four titles in 2022 and 2023, which led to his rapid promotion to F2. His current teammate, George Russell, is considered one of the best in the sport, and Wolff believes this could be a contributing factor to how Antonelli has needed time to adapt to the demands of Formula 1.

“I think it’s also managing his own expectations, he’s so young, he’s just 19 years old,” said Wolff. “You come to a track where you know you’ve performed very well in the past, some of the European ones, and then on the back foot. You have a sensational team-mate that is as good as it gets, and I think coming to a track that you don’t know is almost like less pressure, your expectations are lower, everybody else’s expectations are lower, the kind of fan pressure is less than on some of the European tracks, and I think that plays a big role.”

There were concerns about Antonelli’s future in 2026, especially when rumors circulated about Max Verstappen potentially joining Mercedes. However, these discussions were resolved when Verstappen publicly reaffirmed his commitment to Red Bull. Since then, Antonelli has had his contract extended, and Wolff emphasized that this decision was always part of the plan. He never doubted the young driver’s potential, even during periods of poor performance.

“I was always confident he’s going to get the necessary grip, that’s why it was always clear that Kimi is going to stay with us next year,” said Wolff. “So there was no doubt that with these complicated cars, the management of the tyres is something that you need to learn. In that respect, that’s a great result. One of the good days. Like I said, there were many more difficult [occasions], but there was not a single moment of doubt in how he’s coming, but I always try to dampen the expectations on him.”

The Italian media often refers to Antonelli as a legend, especially after his strong performances in Montreal and Miami. However, Wolff insists that the team remains focused on achieving consistent results and competing for championships.
