Why Manchester City Fought With 12 Players and Equalized Through Van Dijk’s Mistake

The intense match between Manchester City and Liverpool in the 11th round of the English Premier League (EPL) for the 2025-2026 season was overshadowed by a controversial decision that sparked heated debate among fans, players, and officials. The game, held at Etihad Stadium in Manchester, England, ended with a decisive 3-0 victory for Manchester City, marking a significant moment in the league’s history.

Elling Holan, the goalkeeper for Manchester City, experienced a rollercoaster of emotions during the match. In the 13th minute of the first half, he missed a crucial penalty kick from Jeremy Doku after a VAR review. However, Holan quickly bounced back, scoring the opening goal in the 16th minute with a header from a cross by Matheus Nunes.

Liverpool managed to equalize in the 38th minute when Virgil van Dijk scored a header from a corner kick. However, the goal was disallowed due to an offside call. The referee ruled that Andy Robertson, who was in an offside position, had interfered with Gianluigi Donnarumma, the Manchester City goalkeeper. This decision proved to be a turning point in the match, as Liverpool struggled to regain momentum.

Manchester City capitalized on their advantage, with Nico González scoring an additional goal in the first half of extra time. Later, in the 18th minute of the second half, Doku netted another goal, sealing the win for the home team.

Following the match, Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed his frustration, stating, “It’s hard to give my opinion. However, it is clear and certain that the wrong decision has been made, at least in my opinion. Robertson did not interfere with the goalkeeper’s movements at all.” He also pointed out a similar situation from last season when a goal against Wolverhampton was allowed despite a clear offside call, noting that there must have been communication between the referees.

Slot’s comments highlighted a recurring issue in football, where decisions by officials can significantly impact the outcome of matches. There have been previous instances where similar calls were made. For example, in October last year, Bernardo Silva was in an offside position but his goal was allowed. In September 2023, Manuel Akanji seemed to interfere with the goalkeeper during a goal against Fulham, yet the goal was still counted.

Van Dijk, who was involved in the controversial goal, chose not to comment further. He stated, “In football, the referee makes important decisions, and we have to accept it. In my opinion, there is no reason to discuss this matter. The reality is that we lost 0-3 and that’s a big hit. It doesn’t matter what I say. What I’m saying will be reported, and only comments will be made about my decision throughout the A-match period. I’ll just focus on the fact that we lost.”
