$3.78 Billion in Insurance Claims for Flood and Landslide Damage

Insurance Claims Surge Following Natural Disasters in Nepal

Nepal has witnessed a significant rise in insurance claims following the devastating floods and landslides caused by heavy rainfall across the country. The damage, which occurred between October 1 and 3, has led to the loss of lives and property, prompting a surge in insurance applications.

According to the Nepal Insurance Authority (NIA), a total of 434 insurance claim applications have been received so far. These claims amount to Rs 3.78 billion, reflecting the extensive impact of the natural disasters on both individuals and businesses.

Types of Insurance Claims Received

The insurance claims cover a wide range of categories:

  • Assets:382 claims
  • Engineering and Contractor Risk:92 claims
  • Agriculture and Crop Damage:209 claims
  • Motor Insurance (Private):37 claims
  • Motor Insurance (Public):10 claims
  • Marine-Related Insurance Coverage:3 claims

These figures highlight the diverse nature of the damage, with agricultural losses being particularly significant.

Distribution of Claims Across Districts

Insurance claims have been reported in a total of 37 districts across Nepal. Among these, Sunsari has recorded the highest number of claims, with 197 applications. Other districts with notable numbers include:

  • Ilam:60 claims
  • Kathmandu:80 claims
  • Morang:90 claims
  • Jhapa:20 claims
  • Parsa:71 claims
  • Rautahat:28 claims

This distribution indicates that the impact of the floods and landslides was widespread, affecting multiple regions across the country.

Comparison with Previous Disasters

The NIA also reported that insurance claims worth Rs 23.23 billion were filed for the damage caused by the Gen-Z protests in September and 9. In addition, during the previous monsoon season, insurance claims worth Rs 985.9 million were submitted for flood and landslide-related damage.

These figures demonstrate a consistent trend of increasing insurance claims as natural hazards become more frequent and severe.

Impact of Natural Hazards on Insurance Industry

With the frequency and intensity of natural disasters on the rise, the insurance industry in Nepal is experiencing a significant increase in claims. This trend underscores the growing need for robust risk management strategies and disaster preparedness measures.

As climate change continues to influence weather patterns, the likelihood of such events occurring in the future remains high. Insurance companies are likely to face continued pressure to adapt their policies and procedures to address the evolving challenges posed by natural disasters.
