Introduction to the Nature-Based Flood Adaptation Project in Rwanda
The African Development Bank (AfDB) has taken a significant step towards enhancing climate resilience in Rwanda by approving a grant of $9.4 million (approximately Rwf13.7 billion) for the Nature-Based Flood Adaptation Project. Impact of Flooding and Landslides
Flooding and landslides have repeatedly devastated the region, causing loss of life, damaging schools and water systems, and undermining livelihoods. The project aims to address these issues through nature-based solutions such as reforestation, terracing, and riverbank stabilization. These interventions are not only aimed at reducing soil erosion but also at improving water quality and boosting agricultural productivity.
Protection of Public Infrastructure
A critical component of the project is the protection of key public infrastructure, including roads, schools, and water treatment facilities. By safeguarding these structures, the project ensures that communities can continue to function effectively even in the face of climate-related challenges.
Supporting the Kivu Belt Water Project
The project will also improve access to safe and reliable water supply in Karongi, supporting the sustainability of the Kivu Belt Water Project. This initiative is being financed by the AfDB and aligns with Rwanda’s Green Growth and Climate Resilience Strategy. It supports the broader objectives of the African Development Bank Group to build sustainable, climate-resilient infrastructure and inclusive livelihoods.
